What's the best mobile internet browser?

I have a friend who just got a new iphone. I'm not at all interested in Apple, don't own an ipod I own a Zune. I'm die hard Microsoft. After checking out safari, I thought WOW! What a way to browse the web! I wanted to know what other people are using, since PIE sucks!! I've checked out Opera Mobile, and still have a couple days left. I just don't feel quite as impressed. So I wanted to know what everyone else is using... I hate that I almost need my stylus just to get around with PIE. I like the pan and scan of safari...

IF this post was already coverd, can someone please direct me, I've and I apologize for the repeat...

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Well the best i have tried is Netfront browser, seems to display every page the best with finger scrolling. But it sometimes runs out of memory (ok all the time) which is why i stopped using it. Others like Opera, but i haven't tried the newest.

But really, what no one with WM phones really likes to admit is that viewing web-pages on your WM phone is kind of a joke at its current state (every good browser is slowwwww) which is why i have stopped using my phone to browse the internets (cept youtube)....

Maybe when MS develops Deepfish a bit more....

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

i dont think its a joke cuz with all the applications and advanced browser that i have in my ppc i do more in my mogul than my pc really. if you want to have the closest thing to safari then i recommend is Picsel Browser. it has the safari look and feel and looks awesome, the downside is that its too slow for my taste. but on my opinion the best browser right now is opera mobile. looks great, shows full page layouts including animations, zoom feature, page ovreview, multitab, page panning etc. so thats my vote

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Yeah, I definitely like Opera Mobile better than PIE, however it's hard to justify the $24. I did notice that Opera appears to be running slower than PIE... Not sure it that's true, it may be my internet connection. Has anyone tried Opera Mini for WM6? Is it better or worse than Mobile?

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

In my personal opinion, and i've used alot of different browsers on my mogul. (pie, pieplus, opera mobile 8.65, opera mobile 9.405 beta, netfront 3.5, piscel, iris, opera mini 4.1 beta and skyfire beta) The one i find that give the best full desktop type browsing experience is opera mini 4.1. Skyfire is very good also, but its a closed beta. Netfront 3.5 and opera mobile definately let you do more with options like tabbed browsing, selecting text, flash plugin, and they're not a server based browser like opera mini. But i always seem to get memory errors with opera mobile, netfront and piscel. For my browsing needs, opera mini 4.1 works best for me. Its very fast and the newish 4.1 version added some nice features that we're missing. Its not perfect, but well worth the try. dschoenike

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

I have only used netfront and PIE and the last 3 versions of opera.. Obviously i prefer opera.. Netfront REALLY used memory and couldnt do anything while downloading or do multiple downloads.. Opera mobile has all the features and can handle surfing while doing a few downloads o (usually).. However, you do need to clear the cache often for heavy surfing.. the newest beta verson has really cool apperance and better finger control.. but its still beta and has a few bugs.. (like the keyboard not disappearing when using the hard keys!!.. Dealing with that now as i type this! urrghh..)

Opera mini period. I love this thing.

Skyfire is by far the best browser out there. Even in beta, it performs better than any other browser I've tried.

go to the website skyfire.com and sign up. But don't count on getting a beta for a couple months

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

1+ for Opera Mini... but I have a feeling that Skyfire will surpass it.

EtherealRemnant 05-09-2008 04:13 PM

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Skyfire is simply NOT usable right now... it basically turns the whole web page into an image, which means as you scroll, it has to redownload parts of the webpage again and again and again. Even if the web page has zero plugin usage on it, it still takes FOREVER to scroll down the page...

That said, I use Opera Mobile 8.65 for just about everything. It really doesn't perform well if your ROM uses less than an 8MB page pool though but with an 8MB page pool, it flies. MUCH faster than PIE and works on a lot more sites.

Opera Mini is cool as long as you're not reading or posting to forums... or downloading... or sometimes logging in to sites...... But when it does work, it works very well and its by far the fastest browser for the PPC.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

wtf... I don't get it. What ROM are you guys that think Skyfire is the best running? The plugin implementation is cool but SLOWWWWW... and browsing itself is SLOWWWWW...

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

I too, betatest Skyfire and it is pretty cool. Just downloaded Opera Mini 4.1 and it seems to be pretty cool as well. I have purchased Nescape everytime they updated it until the last 2 It IS a memory hog!!!! Sometimes, it would lock up my device!

To me, Opera Mini and Skyfire are very similar. Only been testing Skyfire for a few days and just got Opera Mini. Right now, it's a tough call... Both seem to work better than PIE though.

Got my SF beta yesterday, and while I'll keep it for a while longer, Opera Mini is my browser of choice, even for forums as I'm reading and posting from it right now!

SF is just too slow to render the page while moving around for my taste and the TCPMP with the flash bundle plays vids much better then SF in my opinion (but you do need to drop to PIE to get that combo to work)...

I agree, when I do use youtube its via IE and TCPMP. Video is way choppy within skyfire.

I agree, Opera Mini 4.1 is best out of all of the above. I recently flashed the new test rom and it is faster than ever and is as close as we can get to iPhone web browser till Instinct is released...

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Skyfire is slow, but its faster and more functional than other browsers, IMO. PIE is generally useless, Opera Mini uglifies all web pages, Opera Mobile is ugly itself and a memory hog, Picsel is nice but slow, Netfront is kinda slow and crappy, etc.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Skyfire. I'm loving it. I d/l'ed it about 2 days ago and new from the moment I started using it, It would become my default browser. If I need to download something, I'll go to Opera Mobile. Its fast but not as fast as Skyfire. yea the page rendering can be somewhat slow at times when you're zoomed in but its not all that slow. As far as youtube, I use youtubeplay for that so thats not a factor. I love being able to watch videos on zshare and other videos from flash sites, and sometimes they play almost flawless. Skyfire brings up pages so much quicker than all my other browsers. Like facebook for example. It takes ages to load facebook on every other browser I've tried and skyfire loads it in an instant. They need to work on a desktop browser too :)

What version of Esmertec Jbed are you guys using to run Opera mini, I've been having some trouble with java lately...

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

+1 for Skyfire. I love that it renders pages like desktop. I can even view trailers on yahoo.com. Although video is slow there's still no other browser that can do this. The only thing I don't particularly like is that it goes through a server so I still use PIE for my online banking.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

I will go with consensus here.
For web surfing, I have to say skyfire. For filling in data on webforms, I have to go with netfront 3.5 as well as some chat rooms work in netfront. For videos on your phone, go with flash video bundle...at least for the major ones. For the others, use skyfire (except on youtube...atrocious viewing on youtube)

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

+1 SkyFire.
I don't do Youtube so I don't care about the choppy vids. I do like that it has a embedded media player for streaming radio and a few other things about it.
I think its on the right path. Navigating from site to site is fairly fast but scrolling on a page after zoomed in does load kinda slow.
As of the past few days its been my default browser and I don't see myself changing back any time soon.......

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Opera Mini 4.1 until Skyfire beta manages faster scrolling on pages. I'm looking forward to the final release of Skyfire 1.0 there's a lot of promise in that application.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

What are you guys using to watch videos on youtube? When I try and watch videos on mini I keep getting that I don't have the correct flash version?? I just downloaded the latest realease from Flash. If I try and watch with PIE it tries to play it in Windows Media Player, and tells me that it can't be downloaded at this time...

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

As a paid product, the new Coreplayer works great. Check it out here....
http://coreplayer.com/content/view/28/69/

Otherwise search the threads and download the free TCPMP and skunkworks flash bundle for PIE.

Youtube player is another free alternative.

I use a stand alone application called vTap that searches most video sites including YouTube and plays the content within the application itself without the use of a web browser.

Hope that helps!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned minimo. It's a RAM hog, but I've been playing with it for the past 2-3 days, trying to figure out if I like it better than NetFront or Opera.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

MiniMo is a horrible browser and a totally scrapped project. That is why nobody has brought it up.

Everything that MiniMo does, Opera does faster... And MiniMo crashes a lot with the lack of RAM on the Mogul.

MiniMo hasn't been updated in what, a year?

Hey guys just wondering, I cant seem to install opera mini from their website. The files have a .jar extension that when clic it I get an error message.

Re: What's the best mobile internet browser?

Does the xv6800 even come with Java out of the box? If it does, you need to launch the Java app from Programs first, then go to PIE and try to download Opera Mini...

If there is no Java built in, you need Jbed:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...4&postcount=10

Install that to your phone, launch it, then go and download Opera Mini
