Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I am finally able to upgrade from the free phone I got 2 years ago to a smartphone. I really want the Sprint Mogul. HOWEVER, I have been reading report after report on various enthusiast sites that the Mogul develops one or more spots on the screen after a while. If this is the case, then this is a deal breaker for me.
1. Just how widespread is this problem? Is it isolated to a region or lot number? 2. Has Sprint or HTC fessed up to this problem and can fix it? Thanks, DH |

It looks as if that spot is brighter than the entire screen even when you brighten the entire screen. It might be an HTC problem. Who knows they might recall the phones and make new ones to replace the ones that where affected by this issue. I dont know what causes it, I thought it was because an image was burnt into the screen but a friend of mine has the Mogul and got it too. |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
The spot on my phone goes away and then comes back. It would not be a deal breaker for me.

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I have had the same mogul since probably 2 weeks before it was released for Sprint and i havent had an issue like that at all. I use a little less than 3000 min i send probably fifty emails a day and i use the touch screen/stylus ALOT so i have no clue on why it would do that

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
Dont have a spot on my phone :)
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
it's hardly noticeable on my phone. it's easier to see it when it's up against a white background. Nothing that will impair your mogul experience unless you have a small case of OCD.
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
It is just something that comes up randomly. I was able to manage it by having dark colors on my background, but it ruins the picture when you are trying to watch a video / movie.
It doesn't ruin performance but it would be nice to fix it. ( just imagine if it would expand to a larger spot):protest: |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
Eh it's not on Sprint's Device Known Issues site, but honestly whenever I have a customer comes in with that issue I swap the LCD out for them, if I'm out of LCD's I'll swap the phone out for them. I mean c'mon you fork out a chunk of change on a phone and you want it to not crap out on you for a while. (By the way HTC won't admit it, but it's just a poor designed LCD screen.)

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I just got a Mogul and finding out about the spot (Don't have one... yet).
Luckily I got the extended warrantee. My buddy dropped his phone a couple of times and got his phone replaced with No Hassles via warrantee. |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I work for a Sprint indirect retailer and i've seen 3 moguls with this spot in the same place.. lower lefthand corner about the size of a pencil eraser. I never experienced the issue, but know a lot of people who have.
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
my screen has that exact mark (size of a pencil eraser sort of) however, does not bother me as i didn't spend a fortune on my mogul, i agree w/ the fact that u' must have a case of OCD if it bothers you, as i don't even notice it unless the screen is absolutely white (which is rarely the case). Mos people dont even see it until i actually point it out to them. I do find it odd that it seems to be occurring in the exact same spot (just above bottom left corner) must have been badd QC in the screen manufacturing or something, as mine has been there since I got it.

I have 2 moguls and have had them for a while with no spots on either of them.

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
We should do a poll to get %'s
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that it was the vibrator would overheat. I rarely use the vibrator and don't have a problem. If you start a poll, it might be interesting to see if people who have sopts are heavy vibrator users.

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I have the spot as well. It's not that big of a deal... not enough for me to go get a replacement like others.
I personally think it's an issue with the backlight LEDs (Although I have nothing to back that claim up). |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
There is another thread about this issue. Maybe this should be merged?
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=16139 This is a very widespread problem . |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
i have this prob. asked rep at sprint store, he showed me his mogul and had the same spot, just in different location.
doesnt bother me, I'd rather have a bright spot than a dead pixel |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
Yeah, Ive gotten it on 3 different phones. It really seems to be an LCD issue. If I was making a guess, I would assume it is an issue with the LED backlighting. It might be a lot of things.
But I agree with everyone else. This is not a big deal. It isn't a dead spot or an unuseable spot. I only notice it on a single color background, and only occasionally. Video and active motion games don't seem to really show this.... |

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I have the spot as well. Had it on two different moguls. After I got the replacement mogul, it took some time for the spot to show up, but it did eventually. Its not a big deal at all. You see it, barely, on white screens. Watching a video or playing a game you CANNOT see it no matter how hard you try and convince yourself you can. The only real time you might notice it is when web browsing or writing an email or text, because the background is almost always white. I really dont see this as something you should take your phone into sprint to get fixed, as it really isnt a problem at all, just a slight annoyance. Taking it in to sprint will just cause you and them more annoyance, because A)Getting a new one isnt going to fix the problem. and B)You can still 100% use the device and not suffer any loss in performance or functionality.

i agree with ya bro..My first mogul had it. same spot lower left hand corner..I figured like everyone else i only see it on all white screens in that area.Just had received a replacement new mogul due to my old ones usb port malfunctioning.that don't tell ya about that issue..lol same as the 6700..but as for the white spot i can deal with it..don't get me wrong if they did do a recall..i would so take a new one...even if mine was a week old.its something about when you first peel the plastic of that new device.any way thats my 2 cents so to speak. |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
Wow! My first post on this board and 3 pages of responses! Thanks for the input. I thought long and hard about this and decided to jump in anyway and bought a Mougul tonight. I LOVE it. Considering I upgraded from a free phone 2 1/2 years ago, this is just a quantum leap.
It would be interesting to conduct a survey according to where and when the Mogul was bought that has the white spot problem to see if there are any patterns-region of lot number, that kind of thing. |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I have the spot as well... exact same place as has been mentioned...
It only annoys me if I'm browsing the web with Opera Mini... only its most noticeable when I first launch Mini, not really that bad afterwards. |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
I had it, got it 2x and used it as an excuse to get a touch.
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
i would never trade my mogul for the touch..they tried that when i got my phone replaced.. I raised hell.threatened to cancel then they coughed up a new mogul.
|
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
the spot doesn't 'develop', it isnt a dead spot, its just a spot that looks brighter when you are on a white screen...its been there since day one and really cant be noticed 99% of the time. I'd never give up my keyboard for a Touch or even worse, a smartphone.
I'll keep the Mogul till they come out with a WM7 4" VGA screen keyboard equipped phone |
Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
Honestly, I can still pick out the spot on my screen at any given time on any screen color but I have to look for it a bit. Its not something minor... as a matter of fact, mine actually hurts my eyes if I look at that part of the phone for more than a few seconds.

Re: Mogul Screen Spot: What's the real story?
We bought 8 Moguls for our employees and they all developed this spot. (They didn't come with it.) They all started to notice it at different times, and some have it worse then others. I don't know what to say about the overheating vibrator (and a poll could REALLY be taken the wrong way if you ask "Are you a heavy vibrator user?" )
None of us have taken the phone back because it it though. We've thought about it, but honestly th Sprint store here has, by far, the absolute WORST customer service I have ever dealt with, so we avoid it if possible. The spot doesn't bother any of us, and many of us are anal. :) Half of us are big gamers and all of us use 5000+ minutes (some 9000+) on the phones, so it's not like we "just don't see it" it anything. It's just not that big of a deal. -- Peace. ~G |
