Using Device Lock before turning off the LCD will keep the music playing.

Or get a better program than WM player, like TCPMP (search for TCPMP and you will find a link to download it, its free)

While using WMP, press the power button. Screen will go off but music continues. By the way you need ROM 2.17

OR HTC audio manager.

A couple of ways:

Don't touch the screen for a while, and will go off by itself still playing music

While playing music, press start menu, and click Today, and once at the Today screen press the power button.

all you need is a little app called "screen toggle". It will shut off your screen and even let windows mp still play your mp3s.

I can confirm this doesn't work for me on ROM 2.17. No biggie though - I much prefer Audio Manager and that works great.

When I use HTC Audio Manager I don't have to go back to the Today Screen. I can push the power button and the screen goes off but music keeps playing.
