xv6800 w/o data plan

Who would use or does use their xv6800 or pda without a data plan, but uses their laptop with a wireless pc card as their source for internet, and syncing whatever they want to their pda?

I currently have a xv6800 with unlimited data, but it's getting old missing calls or dropping internet using it with tethering. I am considering getting a Sprint card for free from work and dropping the data plan on xv6800, but don't know if that is sensible thinking. Your thoughts?
