sprint insurance options

i have a mogul, and the other day i fell on it and cracked the screen. i have the $7 insurance thing from sprint, and i was wondering what the best option is?

is it possible that i can say it just broke in my pocket and they will replace it for free?

if not, would i be better off telling them i lost it, so i can keep the battery and make them give me a new one, or is there a higher deductible for losing phones?

also, can i just go to a sprint store to get it replaced, or do i have to call sprint and have them send me one?

thanks in advance,
Ryan Davis

They may charge you a $50 deductible but they don't need to know why or how it happened

CDRacingZX6R 12-15-2007 08:44 PM

When i signed up for the insurance I thought it said it covers all accidents. It did say though as noted before, there would be a $50 deductible.

I doubt it would be replaced completely for free, unless it was something on their end and not yours.

I just used the 7 dollar insurance today. I dropped my phone on the ground and the screen cracked to hell. I took it into the retail store and told them, "HI, I dropped my phone and the screen is completely effed." Within 30 mins, they replaced my phone, no charge at all. Also, saying that you lost your phone when in fact you just broke it is insurance fraud and is something you probably dont want to get involved with, even though your chances of getting caught are very slim. Either way, there would be NO REASON to sign up for the 7 dollar insurance plan if it DIDNT cover accidents, as that is the only thing that will really happen to your phone. I researched the hell out of the program, and you can pretty much stab it with a pencil and throw it in the toilet and its covered. I also got the MicroSD card and the battery from the new phone they gave me, just had to ask nicely. Of course, I am a very talkative person who knows how to get what I want by talking to people and making small talk, mostly being humorous, if you are more shy you might want to leave your battery at home with your memory card when you bring it in so that they have to put a new battery in it to test it out, which they will undoubtedly just give you.

The $7 Total Equipment Protection plan covers just about anything you could do to your phone to be honest. You have the first 30 days after buying a phone to add TEP if you chose not to at the time of purchase, after that you are stuck without it.

If you break the phone, or something is wrong with it like the mmic or spewaker going out, just go to a service location and they will have a tech look at the phone and try to fix it if they can. If they cannot fix it then they will either swap it out with a new one at the store, or order a replacement phone to the store and call you back once it is in stock (Assuming no water damage). If you go to an "Advanced Exchange" location instead, there are no techs, but they are authorized to order a replacement as long as there is no water damage (yes they are trained for that at least, its not hard to spot).

If you lose the phone, it is stolen, or there is water damage, then there is a $50 deductible and you have to go through Asurion insurance, you can get the toll-free number from a retail store. After the deductible they will send you out a replacement phone, pre-activated I believe (but I may be wrong). You can only collect an insurance phone 3 times per year however, and the previous ESNs are blacklisted, to prevent fraud.

If you actually break down the price of an insurance phone compared to buying a new phone at retail price, it is something like $134 for TEP including deductible, versus at least $180 for a new cheapest phone in store, so it is well worth it :)

so let me get this straight i can tell them i lost my phone pay a $50 deductible and sail the mofo and sail the old one on ebay shwett =)

shadowmite 12-16-2007 01:50 PM

The old one would have it's ESN flagged as a lost device and would not be activateable. To date, if you call in you can tell them you found it and they will unflag the ESN, and so far they have not been good about telling the insurance company it was found. However, as stated that is insurance fraud and it would be better not to do that. Get the free replacement and be happy!

Yea, risking prison time and a felony conviction on your permanant record is not worth a few hundred dollars. The only thing you have to watch out for when they are replacing your phone if it is broken, is that they dont give you a refurbished phone. When I went in yesterday, they gave me a new one, which I can confirm by entering ##778# into the dialer, entering my MSL, and checking the refurbished status. Getting a refurbished phone is just not worth the headache, as its a phone that was already all effed up and that they patched back together. These phones are finicky enough when they are new, no need to deal with that extra crap.

In case there are still questions about getting screen fixed, when you have the TEP insurance program, you can take your phone to any sprint store with a service center and have it fixed. I am a sales rep in a corporate store and have seen people bring a phone in thats in 5 pieces and we fixed it. If the techs cant fix it the phone is replaced. Commonly the phone has to be ordered from the warehouse so you keep the broken phone for 3-5 days.Generally you will get a reconditioned handset as that is how the program works. If they are not available it will be replaced with a new one, you do not have a choice in which you get. The only things that are not covered instore are lost/stolen and liquid damage. These cases are covered by the insurance company (asurion), and you would pay a $50 deductible. going into a store and stating you lost your phone, most reps (including myself) will immediately give you asurion's number and send you on your way. Once you report a phone lost/stolen the insurance company will monitor that serial number for activity. If you sell it no one can activate it. if you try to activate it, your phone will be suspended until that phone is deactivated and returned to asurion.

$50 is the way to go and just say it is lost. keep the old one for parts if you ever need them. keep the battery and your good to rock

1oddmanout 12-17-2007 11:31 PM

I just go to my friendly local Sprint repair store (truly a great store in Reston, Virginia), and since part of the plan is to repair the devices, and repairs not possible, they have replaced three 6700s so far. They offered a Q once (before the Mogul), when 6700s were out of stock (found one in Pennsylvania, though), but I'd take a Q9 in a heartbeat, now.

ryan00davis 12-18-2007 12:03 AM

thanks for all the advice everybody.... i went to a sprint store today, they 'tried' to fix it, and obviously couldnt, and within an hour they had a replacement for me free of charge. they wouldn't give me the extra battery, but they did give me all the other accessories free of charge, so not a bad deal. oh, and just a side note, for whatever reason, they wouldnt give me another screen protector. but anyways, cant complain, replaced free of charge with some free accessories.

essidle 12-18-2007 11:53 AM

Not that this hasn't already been said, but two weeks ago my Mogul got knocked off an end table and cracked the screen. Took it into the Sprint store and they had it repaired within an hour at no charge.

Overall it was a very satisfying experience - I expected to fight tooth and nail to get it fixed/replaced. Makes me feel a lot less nervous about having my phone damaged.

akastixx 12-18-2007 12:31 PM

there are two types of insurance, TEP (total equipment protection) and ESRB (idk what that stands for - google it).

one plan is for repairs with the exception of water damage. the cost to repair the phone is small to none.

the other one is for water damage, lost or stolen phones. this will cost you $50 to get another phone.

you can get just the plan for lost phones and ditch your phone (or sell it as a pda only or cricket phone) if it gets damaged, but that is risky and could be more expensive than paying for the plan that fixes the phones for cheap.

you can get just the plan to fix the phone, but what if you end up losing the phone or it gets stolen?

having both costs $7 a month.

Korona 12-18-2007 12:36 PM

For the record, if you pay the $50 deductible and get mailed a new one, the phone does not come activated. You have to call *2 to get it activated and they walk you through a process of changing the MSID and so forth. After that it only takes about 10 minutes for your phone to be working even though they mention it may take between 2-4 hours. By the way, I payed the $50 deductible when my 6700 broke and ended up with the 6800 because it is a phone with "similar features". Thank you Asurion haha
