Tutorial: USB DUN with "Wireless Modem" app on HTC Mogul
Description:
The "Wireless Modem" application lets you connect your mobile device via a USB cable to a computer, and dial-up (DUN) to your phone's EV-DO data connection. This allows you to access the Internet on your computer via your cell phone (tethering)! It seems Sprint/HTC neglected to give us the necessary files to get the "Wireless Modem" (from the good old pre Windows Mobile 6 days) application working. This is a howto on getting "Wireless Modem" setup and running. I've attached the missing files needed at the bottom of this post. Tested with: HTC Mogul running original v2.08 Windows Mobile 6 ROM with Windows XP Pro SP2 (32-bit), and Vista Ultimate Edition (32-bit) Why is this better than other methods?: You may ask what the purpose of this method is when you may already have a working solution such as Internet Sharing, PDANet, or USBModem? Good question, it's: Better than PDANet because:
Better than USBModem because :
Better than the "Internet Sharing" application (included with WM5 AKU3+) because:
Setup Summary
Installing the Dial-up Networking Through Bluetooth Under WM5 AKU3 / WM6 Hack
Enabling PAM (Phone as Modem) Connection
Setting PAM (Phone As Modem) as the default dial-up connection
Disabling NAI/Tethering Detection (hopefully) Using a registry editor, navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\WModem" key, and set the "CheckProfile", "Multi-NAI" and "WModemDUN" DWORDS to a decimal value of "0". Remember to soft reset for the changes to take effect. Note: The following note does relate to getting the "Wireless Modem" application, but might of interest to those using the "Internet Sharing" application. It seems Sprint is up to shenanigans in regards to tethering for SERO users. Those of you running Sprint ROMs should navigate to the following registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing" and delete the string value named "Extension". This will allow you to connect to the Internet via the "Internet Sharing" app without the dreaded error 67/authentication errors. Previous to this fix, Mogul SERO users would have to connect to the Internet via another method (such as starting Internet Explorer first) before pressing the Connect button in the the Internet Sharing application. For the lazy, I've created two Mortscripts (included in the attached .zip file), that apply ("MogulTetherFix.mscr") and, check ("CheckMogulTetherFix.mscr"), that the proper registry entries have been made (both for "Wireless Modem" and "Internet Sharing"). To use these scripts you must first download, and install MortScript from HERE or HERE. Installing the missing files: From the attached .zip file, copy the following files: Wireless Modem.lnk - Description: Shortcut to Wireless Modem application (Points to "\Windows\WModem.exe" /LAUNCH) - Place in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder on your device WModem.exe - Description: The actual "Wireless Modem" application - Place in \Windows folder on your device (v2.08 Mogul ROM already has this file). WModem.exe.0409.mui - Description: English language resources file needed by WModem.exe - Place in \Windows folder on your device (was missing from v2.08 Mogul ROM). |

For those that have trouble getting/installing the drivers, I've extracted them from my machine using DriverGrabber, and put them in the attached .zip under the "drivers" folder. To install them, repeat steps from above, but instead of letting it search the Internet for suitable drivers:

For the MAC and Unix platforms it's just a matter of locating and installing the correct drivers, and setting up the dial-up connection. If you get this to work on those platforms, please reply, with a copy of the drivers, so that I can update the install package. You might have some luck with the drivers HERE. Also you may want to locate/try the PPC-6700 USB drivers for those platforms. And for hints on how to setup the connection on a MAC/Unix machine, try examining the USBModem manual, as the steps should be very similar. -------------------- Changelog: v0.1

WOW! Great job. very precise. this is how a tutorial should be written. easy to follow and everything is explained. thank you for your hard work.
a question or two. i use ICS with luv2chill reg hack and never really had a problem (except with activesync always wanting to turn on). how dramatic of a difference will i see if i switch over to DUN? also, call me optimistic, but i still believe that rev a is coming soon. what effects if any will the rev a upgrade have with a DUN connection? thanks. |
Quote:
The difference will be very small, but we're dealing with slower connections in general, so every little bit helps, especially on the upstream. The main advantage is that it's not NATed which allows you to host server services, if needed, like FTP, Remote Desktop, or run certain games, VPNs, and apps that don't work well under NATed conditions. Anything that requires you to forward a port is problematic when using "Internet Sharing". I have no idea how DUN will work when Rev A comes out (probably in 3 years), we'll just have to wait and see. |
delewaresace,
dude you need to learn how to spell ot go get a spell checker...your post made me throw up in my mouth a little ...another fine example of the american educational system |

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!! Yes, I had to say it. |

and not to totally derail this thread, i plan on doing the wifi hack to use my mogul as a hub. do you think that the DUN hack you have here would affect any settings or screw up anything with that? i can't really see why it would, but i thought i would ask. |

Great guide. Worked like a charm!

when I dial ##3282#, my phone does nothing. I am using the touch dialer. Could that have something to do with it?

I did some investigation for you guys, the dial code ##3282# just brings up the application EPST.exe with a parameter of ##3282 ("\Windows\EPST.exe" ##3282). I've created, and attached, a shortcut file you can copy to your device, and run, as an alternative to accessing it from the dialer.

I'm running Sampson's latest WM5 rom with radio 1.47, and I'm stuck on the step of setting PAM (phone as modem) as the default dial-up connection. When I go to start - settings - connections - connections - tasks tab - manage existing connections - modem tab, the only thing that is there is CDMA1X with number #777...there is no "Phone as Modem" radio button. When I click on edit for the CDMA1X, the modem choices are 'cellular line' (what it's currently on), 'bluetooth', 'generic irda' and 'hayes compatible on COM1.' Is there a way that I can make the proper settings? I tried running through all of the remaining steps in this great tutorial anyway, but when I get to the installation of drivers on my XP machine it detects a generic serial connection, but then can't get an IP address. Anybody know the answer? Thanks for your help! This forum rocks! :headbang: |
TalynOne, what a great write up on setting up USB DUN! I was confused on the differences and this is exactly what I was looking for. Cheers to you!

Sorry to be a noob, but how do I import this file into the registry? I'm using PHM regedit, and when I click on tools the 'import' option is greyed out. I clicked on the file but it just takes me into PHM, with import greyed out. Is there a specific place in the registry that I have to navigate to in order to import the file? Thanks for everything - you should go into teaching. |
I'm on my Mogul now and can't see a link in the 1st post to DL the zip file. Am I overlooking it, or could you add it so mobile users can see it? Awesome write up by the way!
Also, what does it mean if I get "cannot connect using current connection seting" when I click on the link to DL GetSPC? |
thanks for the help, I finally got it working.

To import .reg files I personally use the Registry Editor in the shareware suite Resco Explorer, works quite nicely. A freeware alternative is to use Total Commander, which features registry import features. A howto on importing a .reg file is HERE. You could also use the free CeRegEditor, which is a desktop application that can interface with your Windows Mobile registry, you can get it by clicking HERE. The only one I've actually used though is Resco Registry Editor... Additional Reading: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/men...tryEditors.asp http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?cat=187 |

Thanks for the great write-up! Incredibly clear; I'm having some trouble getting the driver setup to complete. The first driver I install (manually) is the HTC USB Modem driver, which goes flawlessly. Then, windows detects a second hardware device and I point it to the HTC Diagnostic interface driver. It then pops up a file needed dialog asking for "qcmdmxp.sys" on HTC USB Driver Disk. Is this second driver needed for this tethering method to work? Thanks again.

I just have to say that these directions worked perfectly. This post in fact comes from my laptop connected to my phone. :D
Thanks for the detailed and concise set of instructions (as well as downloads)! |
Are there 64 bit drivers for the USB Modem? I can't get drivers for x64

Tried this today and worked flawlessly. Thanks
edit- nevermind got it to work. |

Help Please1 I 've done everything except I do not see a windows directory on the Mogul so what do I do with these...
Wireless Modem.lnk - Description: Shortcut to Wireless Modem application (Points to "\Windows\WModem.exe" /LAUNCH) - Place in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder on your device WModem.exe - Description: The actual "Wireless Modem" application - Place in \Windows folder on your device (v2.08 Mogul ROM already has this file). WModem.exe.0409.mui - Description: English language resources file needed by WModem.exe - Place in \Windows folder on your device (was missing from v2.08 Mogul ROM). I'd like to get the bluetooth connection working too but have not had any luck other than sending picture files from the Mogul to my computer. On my last phone I had a DUN connection on my laptop that would connect via bluetooth on the phone. I'm at a loss on how to get it to work on the Mogul. BTW that connection says it is using com 40. Kind of high but I don't see how to change it. |
Never mind, I stumblen on to the solution......

HTC's response to my request for Vista x64 USB modem drivers:
Thank you for your inquiry about the Sprint Mogul We know it is important for you to utilize all the features of your device, we will do our best to assist you with information in this matter. We apologize for failing to respond to your original email, after searching our systems we found no record of your emails to us between today and 11/11/2007. In regards to your question, HTC does not develop the software or supporting synchronization software for any of our devices. Additionally we also are not authorized to support Sprint customers at the request of your service provider. If you wish to modem tether your Sprint Mogul to your Desktop or Laptop, please contact Sprint's PDA support group for further assistance. Sprint PDA Support: 1-800-927-2199 Thank you for your patience and for contacting HTC. HTC Technical Support http://www.america.htc.com http://www.htcwiki.com http://www.cingular.com/support/ My response: I would like to thank you for your response. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my email. I do find it hard to believe that the manufacturer of the device doesn’t support the necessary drivers to connect the devices to computers. Motorola supplied the drivers for my Motorola Q, Dell supported the drivers for my Axim X51V, HP supplied the drivers for my iPaqs….. Seems a little suspicious to me as I have seen the Vista 32 bit drivers available for the Mogul. Either way, thank you for your time. I will do some more research prior to contacting Sprint as they are as helpful as a man with one leg in an *** kicking contest. Have a good afternoon. |
i used the GetSPC app but when i enter the code, it says that its the wrong code.
