Sprint unlocking phones

I just read an article on Engadget stating that you can now bring phones in from other cdma carriers. Looks like even if you don't want a mogul you can bring in another cdma phone. Sorry mac boi's no Iphone. This should be pretty good for us in the ppc market.

Am I mistaken or doesn't this news mean that we can take Sprint phones to other carriers, but not other carriers (Verizon and Alltel) to Sprint. When I saw this news a couple days ago, I thought I had it figured out, but after your post, I am back to my normal self ...... confused, but amused.

Unfortunately, the story is wrong. The actual facts of the case are:

1. Only applies in California (can you say "Ah-nold"?)

2. Sprint is unlocking phones they sell to you if you want to leave.

3. Sprint is NOT accepting non-Sprint phones on their network, and they are not legally obligated to.

4. Ok... so you leave Sprint with your unlocked phone... now what? In other words, none of the other CDMA carriers is legally obligated (at the the moment) to allow your former Sprint phone on their network.

So in the end, this news really gets us no further until CDMA carriers are forced to accept outside phones.

If you read the article it states that sprint will be teaching employees how to add phones from other carriers.

Once again, the article is wrong regarding that piece of information.

Here is a much better article that explains the case:

And here's the actual court papers:

Thanks for verifying that I am not crazy. I couldn't see how Sprint unlocking their phones allows locked Verizon and Alltel phones to be used on the Sprint network. Maybe somewhere down the road this might make a difference, but nada for now, I'm afraid.
