xv6800 as hand held GPS

I want to use my old xv6800 (VZW version, although that doesn't really matter too much) as a stand-alone off-road GPS. I've found that the GPS works with the radio turned OFF - which is handy for battery life, since I won't have to always be searching for the network that I won't be using.

I plan to run Backcountry Navigator, which doesn't need a net connection during use. I'll also likely install GPS Today for the home screen "quick" sat lock and MPH info, although it's not terribly useful w/out the data connection (I may also try wifi access pt from my Omnia to allow that data feed).

My question is what ROM should I convert to. I'm running DCD3.0.4 and figure the WM6.5 kitchen is probably worth a look, since the newer windows is more finger friendly than the old 6.0. I have radio ROM 3.35.04. Should I upgrade that too for possibly better GPS reception?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
Scott
