Yahoo Mail downloads entire inbox

My yahoo mail is set to download messages from the prior 3 days but occasionally it downloads my entire inbox. This causes my phone to freeze up and have poor perfomance. Any body out there know how to fix this problem without just deleting your yahoo mail completly?
