Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
I picked up the Hero and used it for about 2 weeks and I really liked it at first. Coming from a TP2 it was definitely faster and Android 2.1 is great. However, I noticed that the more apps I loaded on it the slower it got. After adding about 20 or so different apps it got to the point that it made my TP2 look like a superphone. Another issue I had with the Hero was the fact that there will not be an official 2.2 update. I know I can get a custom ROM here, but I really wanted to avoid that route unless absolutely necessary. The last thing (and the thing that ultimately made me bring it back) was the lack of a physical keyboard. I have big fingers, and I loved the QWERTY keyboard on my TP2, but the virtual keyboard on the Hero is too small for me. I will be getting the Samsung Epic (already placed a pre-order at RS). I don't mind the extra $10.00, and I need the keyboard.

Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
I've been browsing various sites including this one for a Hero but was wondering what an appropriate price should be. I figure with the Evo out and the Epic coming out soon, the demand/price wouldn't be as great but I may be wrong.
Any input as to how much I should expect to pay for a Hero? |
Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
Considering its $149 with a contract at Sprint, and the phone has been out for over a year, I wouldn't pay more than that. A quick search on my local Craigslist found 6 of them for $150.00, so I guess that's where the market is.

Yeah in my area (NYC) they're going for $125-$150 it seems.

Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
I've owned the HTC Hero thru Sprint since November.
I do like it, but wouldn't get it today due to it being underpowered by current standards. It was pretty good with the native Android1.5, but I've flashed current Fresh ROMS as they come. Android 2.x is a little too much for this phone. There is a weird audio bug, where periodically the audio will just quit (there is a Bug ID for this, and is supposedly fixed, but I still see complaints about it. Anyways.....) If I were to get a phone today, I would go for the EVO, or any Android phone with the 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU (the Hero is a 500Mhz process, I think). Yes, they'll make you pay a $10 fee because its a 4G phone, even though 4G coverage isn't in many places, but your EVO phone will run faster then the Hero even over 3G because of the extra CPU power. To help reduce that $10 fee, look for a discount offer for Sprint. I have a 18% discount for my Sprint service through my employer. But I was also offered a 5% or 10% discount thru my Credit Union. Many people are Credit Union members. I might even have a scan of that offer stored somewhere. |
Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
BTW,
In November, I received my brand new Hero with a new Sprint contract and paid only $100. The sign indicated $179, and I figured the discounted prices was because it was about to come down. But not sure that ever happened. Maybe I was just nice to the Customer Service Rep. |
Re: Is it still worth it to get a Hero now?
Im in the same boat the OP is. I have been looking at Heros, but also been looking at the Samsung Moment. It looks like hardware wise the Moment is a better device, but there doesnt seem to be much support or hype about it.
Is the Moment truly a better phone than a Hero? Why doesnt the Moment get the same about of love the Hero does? I'm coming from the TP2 WinMo world, so please forgive my n00bness when it comes to Android phones :) |

To be honest, I don't need a super multimedia phone like most new phones are. I probably use my phones most for web surfing, either during my commute to and from work, while in the toilet, etc. lol I rarely even make phone calls. If the Hero is a good platform for web browsing, then that's perfect for me. Also, I went to a Sprint store to check out the Evo and Hero in person and I personally like the size and feel of the Hero in my hand compared to the Evo which is a bit oversized. Thanks for all the helpful replies so far in this thread. |
