Skype for Android?

I used to have an HTC Mogul, and I used the skype app frequently for work related international calls. I have been waiting for a good skype app for Android, and now I find out that it is "only available on verizon wireless devices."

There is an android skype app that runs on the HTC Droid Eris. Does anyone know if it can be installed on the Hero? Is there any reason why it wouldn't run on a sprint phone? How would one get ahold of said software to try it out? Unfortunatley the skype website does not offer it as a download, so it must either come pre-installed on Verizon handsets, or it is only available on the Verizon Android Market.

I don't even know why it wouldn't work since it's just using the data... hmmm...
I think the program sipdroid works with VoIP kinda stuff and I *think* can work with Skype people, but I'm not too knowledgeable in this scene.

more info on skype/sipdroid stuff

The original skype does not work because they have a contract with Verizon. I know the Lite Beta version works but I think its hacked to remove the Wifi and network type.

You can try Nimbuzz... I'll be honest, it sucks having no skype, I'm patiently waiting for a 3rd party company who will make one... wish skype would stop being stupid with Verizon and actually release an official application like the Windows mobile one or Iphone.

@thacounty, Vlingo isn't an official released application yet is it? no application on market. found it on another site though.
