what does this screen mean?

I dont have a screen shot of it, but It's pretty easy to describe. I was attempting to flash my phone this weekend. I did not get it every time, but the power + home buttons being held would yield a black screen with a pic of a phone sitting under a triangle with exclamation point inside of it. What does this screen mean.

Additionally-
The other screen that I was able to get was not the screen with "wipe" and apply update screen that it seems all the "how to's" say I should get. I was only able to get a reset screen.

I'm guessing my hero does not have the proper custom recovery image to allow flashing?

Thank you for your time

Yeah you need to root the phone and flash a recovery image...

Understand, but heres the thing that is confusing me. I used the pre kitchen to root my phone, I figured it was a success because I was sucessfully running wireless tether for root users. Now as far as the custom recovery image I was not sure if it worked or not.

My question was what does the screen mean. But I'm guessing from your response that it means the phone is not rooted and does not have a custom recovery image properly flashed

Thank you anyway I will try again

It may be rooted but you dont have the recovery image flashed. Basically you wont be able to flash any roms or update.zips and cant access the wipe functions and nandroid back up. It is pretty important.

Re: what does this screen mean?

Well this time around, I am sure that my phone is rooted. I installed a root required program from market (shake screen capture one) and it works. I am having a problem flashing the recovery image.

I'm using, recovery-RA-herocv1.6.2. (not sure if this is latest and greatest) I have it copied to the sd card (no folder) and using the terminal emulator from market

using the comands
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ recovery-RA-herocv1.6.2.img

I get - error writing recovery: permission denied

EDIT- Problem resolved. It seems like there are too many "how to's" on the net. After following most of them none worked and I was getting errors like the one above. The link to to the thread above posted by carla darla is the way to go for anybody reading this with the same problems I was having. You will have to read through
