If you back out of apps instead of pressing home you won't have this problem. In order to test I actually don't use a task manager anymore at all, checked my available RAM with Astro, it said 20MB, this seemed low, but I was having no lag problems. If you do press home though you actually leave the program running, saying to Linux, don't kill this app or take any of its resources, and that can slow the device down.
