For starters, it takes 3 or 4 charges and discharges before the battery is broken in and will provide good life. Not sure how far along you are in that process.

I have done everything you mentioned in your post already. I got the phone on the 7th or 8th of this month, so I'm well past 3-4 charges (I charge it nightly and sometimes during the day if I know I'm going to be away from a charger into the evening). I've tried 2 different batteries, including one that is brand new which gave great performance on the TP2 for the last couple of weeks since I got it.

I have an IMAP account that has to poll fairly frequently during business hours, so I set it to 15 minutes. I know that eats battery, and once my current project is over I hope to set it back to 30 or 60 minutes. That will probably help. Other than that, for me battery life is something I'm getting used to worrying about again.

Sprint has the rechargable battery pack for the micro usb. $30 on their website.

My theory is twofold. First, I suspect Android is phoning home and sending stuff to places I don't even want to think about. It's probably all in the fine print somewhere. Second, the native news, weather, and stock apps are set to update much more frequently than I'd like. Today I turned them off completely just to see if it makes a difference.

But the biggest driver for me is the screen, according to the "what's using my battery" page. I use brightness at 25%.

Last night at 11pm my battery was at 20-30% (I don't recall the exact number but it was orange in the notification area). With the TP2, same operator usage pattern (meaning stuff I'm doing vs. stuff the phone is doing on its own/in the background) I'd be at 80% at the same time. Maybe 70% if I had a long conference call during the day.

Needless to say I'm looking for a good rechargeable battery pack with a built-in MicroUSB connector, since getting the battery door off this phone is harder than doing my taxes.

Wirelessly posted (Samsung Epic : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Sprint APA7373KT Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

I dont like how the screen goes out of wack on the browser when rotating or sliding out keyboard. it would be nicer for it to automatically re adjust. the keyboard is amazing compared to the epic which I came from. volume rocker as we all know is in a bad spot ... one thing that annoys me is the obvious drop in signal when cupping the phone as well as after scrolling a page I have to wait a second before I can click a link.

After half a day of very un-scientific testing, turning GPS off seems to be helping the battery life. I am going to try leaving it off and just using the widget to turn it on when I plan to use it.

DOn't use Automatic task Killers! thy interfer with Androids built in killer and makes your OS laggy and buggy. Coming from a Touch Pro Wmobile phone back in the day to an EVO and Now the Shift I hated Threaded sms too, but after a few weeks I grew to love it. As with any major change it takes a bit of time to get used to. Put a case on it and the Vol button is not an issues anymore. Or get Buttonremapper from the market and set it to something else.
