Compiling a kernel

I want to learn how to compile a kernel myself. Are there any good sites out there that explain this in detail or some how-tos floating around the internet?

Some of the stuff I've found is a little outdated and I don't know if that really makes a difference.

I think first of all you need to pick a device and then I think you can go from their as I believe the kernels are device dependent. I don't know what kind of search you did, but below is links to threads that I found by typing in "how to build a kernel for an htc evo" in google.

Nice. The one on android central looks like it's pretty informative. Thank you
