Stuck between rooted and not rooted

Some time ago I used Unrevoked3 to root my Evo. While the process seemed to work fine, and the Superuser app showed various programs had superuser permissions, none of those programs ever worked. I could not use wireless tether, backup programs, etc. But the phone still worked fine, as if it were not rooted, so I just gave up and went on with my life.

Now I am starting to get that screen separation on the bottom left corner. If I exchange the phone, will I get busted for having rooted? Is there a way I can back everything up without being rooted, so I can get everything back on a new Evo?

I find the topic of rooting to be rather confusing, so don't be afraid of dumbing down any advice you might want to share. Thanks!

It sounds like you just have some permission issues. Several programs will run through and issue a ChMod. Download Rom Manager and run the fix permissions. Also, be sure you have the latest BusyBox command interpreter. If you install the free verison of Titanium Pro, it has a link to update BusyBox. You can also find it on the market.

I've done all these things several times. No luck.

I'll give the All in One Update solution a try tomorrow. Thanks!

I just installed this after unrooting and re-rooting to fix some problems. its working great. Do you have the specs on this rom? like what's included and what's not? I was getting ready to install the Sprint Hotspot fix, but I just tried it and it was there. I wanted to make sure I didnt screw anything up by adding hacks that were already there.

I really want to change my icons in the header of the screen (bluetooth, GPS, battery, etc..) But I wasnt sure if I installed anything would it screw up the toggle buttons in my notifications menu.

Well, I did this, and it worked. I guess it was not what I was trying to do exactly? I didn't want to delete my data and settings. I just wanted to put things in a state that I could exchange the phone if I needed to.

The Rom is lovely though. Is there anyway to get my other stuff back? In particular, how can I get back the apps I paid for? ETA: Never mind. I had not signed in with the right Google account when I first booted up the phone. Reflashed, used the right account, and all is well.
