Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

Seeing as I was in the exact scenario as this fellow...
I went through and 'thanked' all the posters that helped this guy out. I was amazed at the a-holes on the TP2 forum that were more concerned about forum organization and being the first to say "wrong forum" or "mods please move" and that's it with no help or a one liner ie. Read the Stickies, than actually helping people out. I am really glad to see that not happening here.

Bravo EVO people.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

The Hater Edition instructions are very simple and well written. It also includes amon_ra which I highly reccomend for backing up since this does back up your wimax partition. As for you bricking you EVO you can always run an RUU from your pc to restore. I've had to use that twice. Seems very similar to WebOS doc.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

Amon_RA just release a new Recovery today. Addresses alot of the issues that the new Bootloader people were having.

recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.1.1.img

I wrapped it up in a PC36IMG.zip file so all you need to do is put it on your card and go into bootloader and run HBoot.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

Thanks to everyone who replied, I'll be thanking your posts in a few minutes.

I guess I'm off to see the wiz... er rooting my Evo now. I'd like a simple clicky-click method, but the "hater's edition" seems to be a sure thing and has the most failsafes built in, so I'll be going with that.

Wish me luck!

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

Ok, I'll be 'that' guy just this once... this root thing is stressing me out as I'm searching for the easiest yet most complete process to follow i seem to only confuse myself further. Between unrevoked, backing up my RSA keys, z4root.apk, adb_shell, recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.1.1.img .... on and on and on!

It's starting to feel like Inception: confusion within 3 other levels of confusion.

Here's what I want:
1 to back up my RSA keys (adb_shell didnt seem to recognize my device so I got nowhere)
2 I'm leaning toward using unrevoked 3.3 for the actual rooting. I'd be willing to consider last nights update of Amon Ra if someone can tell me what to do with the recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.1.1.img to make it "bootable"?

Halp! Thanks

1.did you try a different usb port
2. how you root is up to you but i would just use unrevoked
3.hold power button while pushing vol down
this will get you to hboot then you can use this pc36img to put recovery on your fone

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

The latest UnRevoked worked great on my daughter's phone last night. When people have trouble with UnRevoked, it is usually the driver thing. Pay close attention to that. Luckily for me, it found my driver from a long time ago. It went so fast that I was suspicious whether it was really rooted.
I went into Bootloader and sure enough, S=Off.
Also, right after Root, unpgrade your recovery. I attached a copy of the latest a few posts up.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

I went ahead and tried unrevoked... pretty sure it worked for the most part, my only concern was that it never gave me an opportunity to backup my RSA keys because when the menu came up it quickly switched over to the screen getting scrambled and then a quick reboot... Titanium backup told me i've acquired root after downloading BusyBox. My biggest concern right now is backing up the RSA keys.
