As with any platform, its a bit more stable depending on which you choose. You can also control processor speed and voltage to help maintain battery life. Other than that, the evo pretty much does everything out of the box

Samsung support isnt great from what I hear, like you said. I heard CM6 is going to produce a rom for one of the models though. Also as good as that phone is doing stock I image its going to be a big hit for devs so it will probably get lots of support from the outsiders.
