What do custom roms do?

I'm new to this and I understand what rooting is but what is the point of a custom rom? I understand some roms have wifi tether installed but can't I just root my phone and install wifi tether myself? I don't have my evo yet but will be getting it this week. What is the best rom out?

Re: What do custom roms do?

you can flash a stock "rooted" rom if you would like (once your rooted and the nand is unlocked) .. most custom roms have programs added or removed .. and they're usually tweeked" for speed, stability, and battery life

Re: What do custom roms do?

i also switched from a TP2 to an EVO and the difference is night and day! its so nice having a phone that just works without having to be constantly reset and lag every time i touch the screen.

as for custom roms. i would recommend cyanogen mod 6 if you dont plan to use 4g or in a non 4g area so that you can try without the sense ui. i did flash Fresh when i went to Chicago where they did have 4g.

Re: What do custom roms do?

Your gonna love the EVO. Once you get use to it root it and check out some roms. I am on CM6. It has teather, new blue tooth stacks to allow for the wii remote to work. Its got the you tube parental setting unlocked so you can change it. On the stock rom the setting is set to block out anything with a curse word and you cant change it on the stock rom. There is so much more then just wireless teather. Flash a few of the well known roms and try that out if you dont get 4G and dont care about fm radio or HDMI out flash CM6 last its simply the best "none HTC sense" rom. But hey you might like sense most people do at first. Also I thought the switch from windows to android was going to be tough, android is so easy its was a simple and easy switch.

my buddy just bought the vibrant and 2.1 on that thing beats out a nexus one with 2.2! i cant even imagine how beastly it would be with 2.2 and the hummingbird cpu. ive heard that the community support for samsung devices is not as large as the HTC though.
