All Evo Froyo 2.2 "is it rooted yet" talk [solved]

Can the latest evo update to 2.2 be rooted? I have tried unrevoked3 and unrevoked directly on my phone browser and it is not working. I just want the root to run root only programs like wifi tether. Can anyone help me?

Edit

1st method out HERE

Moved to General Evo Discussion. Upgrade forums are only to release a ROM/Radio or Kitchen.

As far as your question I don't think the official 2.2 update can be rooted as of right now, if I am wrong I am sure someone will chime in.

Rager02 08-09-2010 02:30 AM

Nope, not yet atleast.

Yea man.... We should sticky the fact that if "you have just bought an evo DO NOT DOWNLOAD the update you can always download later, if you'd like but as of now once the ota update is installed your stuck unroll further notice"..... I bought it and the girl said to update the os....so I did.and now I'm in the same boat some of you are.......for now any way. But I'm going too continue on my path of trying to downgrade with the original 2.1(i assume) that the phone comes with. Like if I get the installer for the 2.1 that older phones would have too download however long ago it was when that came out.

Well, since this is a stickied thread and you just said it, I think it has been covered :)

Not sure if this is the same, but i've been running it for last few days. No wireless tether unless you flash, set cam to 8mp, vid to 720, then install netarchy kernel. (which i haven't done, downloaded free trial of pdanet again as i wait for better fix) do a nand backup, ti backup is blank from eclair to froyo flash. Wipe data and go thru market again. Make sure you find the move to sd app and click on your downloads as they download. Some will auto update, some you have to check the auto update box. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352

I always thought unrevoked wasnt a full root. With the new one coming out that promises 2.2 root, is this one a full root? And will the PRI be 1.47?

from what I've gathered about the current thing they're working on is that you already have to have root, but the "unrevoked forever" is "perma-root". no matter what the ota you'll still have root using unrevoked forever.

Agreed. I learned my lesson the hard way by updating the last time and having to wait. I don't use a full root because I have yet to find a root for using a Mac that is not super complicated.

i dont understand why is it so hard to load a copy of the original RUU of 2.1 that came with the phone and then follow the instructions root...is this not possible with android? (i mean, i did this with Windows Mobile all the time, even on the HD2)...somebody correct me if I'm Wrong on this... :-)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Sprint APA9292KT Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

What I don't understand and maybe someone can explain this. You have root access with roms running Froyo, and you update to a yet unrootable Rom with the same stuff. I came to Android from WM and I am learning.

I'm new too.. but I think it boils down to the fact that you have to have once been able to root in order to get a custom recovery image on there (similar to multi-boot OS loader on a computer) and then with that recovery selector, you pick a rom... and those ROMs would have the additional root power baked in. But without that OS loader, you are out of luck. I may be wrong here, but I think that's essentially it. And for those of us who are presently on the unexploited 2.2, we cant modify the recovery image selector. So, we cannot load rooted roms.

about dead on. stock 2.2 guys have to wait for root. unrevooked (spell checker don't know this one) forever might get you started, user input would be required for further info. (rooted already can't help)

So if you do the OTA to 2.2 , you can just flash back to the 2.1 shipped rom and root from there?

No. You cannot flash back to 2.1 unless you had previously rooted and changed the recovery partition. So once again... if you accepted the OTA as it was, it destroyed root and locked you down... and it probably over-wrote the recovery partition... which means even those who were rooted before it were out of business.

Basically, the only way to have survived was to NOT take the OTA but rather to wait for someone to extract the image out of the OTA file... where they then rooted it up (not sure how) and then take the modified OTA image. But.... unless you waited and did it that way... you are out of luck until someone exploits 2.2

It will be a long wait I think. Longer than the wait for FroYo itself.

I am betting that by the time the 2.2 root exploit comes, we will see Gingerbread come out which will close that exploit as well... taking out another 50% or so of the exploiters... unless we learned out lessons... lol.

pbrussell 08-16-2010 04:21 PM

Re: All Evo Froyo 2.2 "is it rooted yet" talk

You know its also a possibility that they have successfully exploited 2.2 already and just are waiting for gingerbread to come out to release it so we will not only be able to root 2.2, but gingerbread as well.......i mean it would make sence to hold off on the release so that when gbread comes out the deva won't have to deal with the new era of evo-ers SOL bc they upgraded b4 the gbread was routed!!

Re: All Evo Froyo 2.2 "is it rooted yet" talk

I'm curious to ask...for those who accepted the 2.2 upgrade from Sprint/HTC...why do it IF you already had full root?

Knowing that AOSP will be released soon after as with the source coming from HTC??

I know lots of folks were in a hurry to get at Froyo...there were MORE than a few alternatives out there...damned good ones too (Avalaunch's V and X series come to mind...)

This reminds me of the whole 6.1 to 6.5 adventures in WM...by the time 6.5 OFFICIALLY released to the devices...most of us geekers were already running some form of 6.5.3.

I stayed out of any official updates from Sprint since their stock ROMs have always been somewhat buggy. I decided to stay rooted...and flashed updated radios, kernals, and of course ROMs. Only thing I think I'm missing is 4G...not being in a 4G market really doesn't impact me at all...

of course this doesn't cover those that got their device AFTER the update...and they are in that root waiting game ;)

No, it isn't one bit possible.
1. No dev has that amount of self control. They would rather have the public praise.
2. No dev has a vested interest in preventing us from being stupid.
3. No dev is against the concept of the next challenge.

so a person who did the ota 2.2 cannot downgrade to 2.1, root then flash a rooted froyo rom yet? any eta when this might be able to happen?

From what I have heard no ETA for you guys. And no to the first question. I think some of the problem is all the devs for the most part who would/could make this happen already have rooted phones, so it isn't exactly a priority nomesayin? Could be wrong but that is just my take on why it hasn't happened yet.

Re: All Evo Froyo 2.2 "is it rooted yet" talk

Maybe ferrying a copy of the 2.1 update and alerting it so your phone reads it as an UPDATE hence downgrading the firmware I mean what stops us from just getting a copy of 2.1 and that replacing froyo.

so what do people do when they buy the phone from sprint and it comes pre-loaded with froyo? id like to think the devs would work on this. unless they are all jumping ship again to the epic? disgust

I don't think they are jumping ship, but who knows. People don't do anything when they buy the phone preloaded with Froyo at this point. Sit and wait, but it does seem like they are getting close.

Wow, I am so glad that I went with my gut feeling and denied the update when it popped up on my phone. I then I checked on here and saw that it would lock me out from rooting. I have been denying it for weeks now, and tonight I finally rooted. Will the update still pop up? And if I accidentily accepted it would I lose root?

I have been rooted since I got my Evo, haven't received an update notification since. And yes, if you accept now I think you will be SOL until it becomes rooted.

Thanks, well hopefully the 2.2 update wont pop up....and if it does I just gotta be super careful not to accept. OHH, I would be so mad if a friend or my fiance had my phone in hand when the update popped up and they accepted!! I dont think they would anyway, but wow that would suck!

Well I just got a new EVO today because my previous one the digitizer crapped out was a HW 002 version. Any way picked it up today after waiting for about 3 weeks from radioshack. Put the battery in flipped it on and it already had 2.2 froyo loaded on it so they are all shipping now with 2.2 in place so im pretty much SOL.
