1st - you need to uninstal htc sync and htc drivers

2nd - download unrevoked 3 from http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/

3rd - run the Reflash-bundle.exe you downloaded (it will ask you to extract to a folder) I created one called unrevoked3. it will extract all teh files you need

4th - plug your phone in and run reflash.exe from the files you extracted.

5th - follow the instructions in the popup window and it will root your phone enough to install the tethering app

6th - use the attached file and save it to your sd card.

7th - install the tether app you just downloaded

8th - when prompted select remember for superuser access

9th - you can start wifi tethering

i will be happy to answer questions about the setting up of tethering but not on how unrevoked works.

hope this helps if you havent updated to the OTA 1.47 you can still use the old unrevoked way in my signature

Great guide, do you know if once you've obtain full root and are able to tether can you now use hotspot for free?

When I run reflash and plug in my phone, it just sits there and says waiting for device. USB Debugging is turned on and I dont have HTC sync installed on my PC.

never use hotspot I just use wifi tether.

it sounds like the drivers are not installed. for help with unrevoked you would need to contact them

I am fully rooted with simpleroot..I received my replacement evo but was updated and had to root with 4 clicks (simpleroot) and flashed the rooted stock Rom 1.47..downloaded the wireless theter and it seems to be working but only shows 2 kb down and 1 kb up..when I scan can't find my Android WiFi...if I use unrevoked 3 will I loose full root and nand unlock??...because from what I understand unrevoked doesn't wipe Dalvik cache.....

Is there a way to root from your phone?? Like an apk I can run or anything like that? And will it make the wireless tether apk work? Thanks in advance guys :-) sorry if this is a noob question

I used Unrevoked 3.0 and when I tethered, I got speeds that were screaming. I made sure it wasn't my cache by going to pages that I had not been before. I never did a formal speed test, though.

Sorry if this is a dumb question...with this method do I lose all data/apps currently on the phone.....like I would if I was loading a custom ROM?

Nope you will not lose your data just follow the guide and you will be fine. Once it is done you will see a black screen on your phone that gives you a reboot phone option. Pick that hit power button phone will reboot. Then dump the teether ap on sd and install. You will be good as gold then :) Remember no question is a dumb question that what this fine site is for to help people.

Is my Evo able to use android wifi tether app while on the charger. . . or will it overheat and stop charging . . . like the Touch Pro 2 does? Also does the app automatically tether 4g if turned on and available allowing me to recieve calls, or is there something special I have to configure?

Lastly can I usb tether for free with the Evo on a mac?

Yes you can tether free on the MAC, using pdanet. I think easy whether also works but not sure on that one. They are both programs in the market, they both have free trials but require purchase after the trial end or you can only go on unsecured sites is how it works to my understanding. Boo boo may be able to hook you up with easy tether but not certain, worth asking tho :-) o and both require some sort of program on your computer, but they are easy to install and use : ) hope that helps, as for the other stuff I am not the one to ask :-P sorry friend

In windows check under your add/remove programs. If you don't see anything htc there you will be fine. If you do uninstall em. Then follow guide and have some fun :)

I haven't had any heat issues with this phone. The phone will get warm but I don't see an issue with it. I came from a TP 2 also so I no about the heat issues. I have had many things running and the phone always works great while charging. Mac no clue I don't own any. Other have said it works.

I was a bit nervous at first because I had avoided installing the OTA, and I knew that once I did there was no turning back. Fortunately it was a very simple process.
I am now fully OTA'd and Unrevoked.

If you do this are you still running the 1.47 software? I like the longer battery life I'm getting with the OTA update.

Also, lets say I need to take the phone in for service, repair, etc. How do I delete it? Is it software I can just delete and then a Sprint Tech can't tell what I did?

I could not get the reflash program to recognize my phone on my Windows computer. Luckily I had my sister's Mac. All I did was download the reflash program for Mac and ran it. I then plugged my phone in and it did the rest. My Evo is now rooted and WiFi tether is working great!

I had absolutely no problem rooting and gaining wifi tether. However my facebook stopped syncing. It keeps saying it's "unavailable at this time" when I try to log in. Can anyone tell me why that is and how to fix it?

ok Noob question here.. I installed Unrevoke 3 and it booted fine. It said to vol down to HBoot and hit power , after that it doesnt do anything. flashed some green messeges then goes right back to the program .. not locked or anything because i can reboot fine...Boo Boos instruction said to copy attached file to sd, I assume the file he was refering to was the teteher app that was attached to the thread.. Am i missing somthing ?

Ok found the problem i needed the android drivers installed .. Now i get thru all but lost now . It asked do i want to install a zip file ? I go to the sd card fine .. am i supposed to rename the teather to a .zip ?

Now i rebooted and i see the Wireless tethering app installed .. (But i never did anything to install it) Does it automaticly install when you do the unrevoked app ? or is it already there as a sprint app and i never noticed it ? anyway its working just not 100% sure how i got it installed ..
Going to write a NOOB!!! instruction file once i get all the questionis answered..

You may be looking at the Sprint Hotspot app that's pre-installed. I used a file manager app (eStrong File Manager available in Android Market) to find/install the wifi tethering app.

No its the WIFI tethering by Harald M. version 2.0.5pre3...
I see the sprint hot spot.. one also.. LOL Like i said didnt do and thing to install this manually so not sure how i got it installed.. testing it and not getting all that great speeds thru Speedtest but it does work...

The confusing part to me in once i was able to get the unrevoked running and setup was HOW do you install an app after that ? Are you supposed to do it from that app or reboot and now your rooted and able to install just like any other app ?

For any of you who ran Damage Control 3.2.3 (I did the 3-step root method, so that's all I can swear to this working for), and had to run an older version of unrevoked to get it to install, you don't have to go through all these steps. Just download the version of wireless tether Boo Boo posted, uninstall the old version, and run the new apk. You MUST manually uninstall the old version (use app manager), it seems, then install the new version. No need for unrevoked3

I figured this out in desperation, because I had the problem others in this thread had, of getting the installer to quit "waiting" for my device to be hooked up. I tried everything, then decided to see why the apk wouldn't install. Once I deleted the existing one, it installed and I am posting this from my laptop tethered to the Evo.

when i plug the phone in how should i set it? debugg? disk drive? how?

will this just root my phone? will my comtacts and settings be untouched?

will the next OTA unroot it?

you dont lose any info. you need to contact the unrevoked people if you are having issues with unrevoked.

yes through control panel, run the uninstaller. also do a search for htc if you have win7 and if anything pops up, delete it.

disk mode? just plug your phone to the computer, the compter will recognize it and run reflash on your computer.

yes you can delete the files after rooting

reboot will NOT lose root

not sure what the froyo patch will do. best to NOT DO ANY UPDATES until further notice by unrevoked.com
