MSL Code question...

I have a question regarding the MSL code. I don't think mine has changed throughout the time I've been at Sprint. I've gone through at least three phones of different models and I think (can't remember because I don't) my MSL has always been the same.

Is the MSL tied to the subscriber line or the phone's ESN or some other number?

Sorry if this is a really basic question.
