i think apple will unlock the front facing camera eventually, so you can use it with fring or other chat apps. But i wouldn't hold your breath for at least half a year

I read the thread title and my first thought wasn't how to make that happen, it was why would you want to?
Anyway, if you're dying to just use the app, check out this thread and call some of these people, I'm sure some of them will talk just for the sake of using the app

No they won't. They're going to force other services to tap into their "open source" system. They've already said this. Skype has already mentioned that they're working on tapping into the facetime system too.
