Ok, I am still having a problem....I h ave rooted my phone, installed the latest wifi software, both by double clicking on it and also through a terminal (insurings I was logged on as root), and I still have the following error when I start the tethering process: "Unable to start tethering. Please try again!" What gives????

Latest wifi tethering app. Rooted Evo. I have installed a few different ways. I even did an adb install, as root - remotely.

Some config file need to be checked? Some daemon need to be started?

On a side note, how can we tether via the USB connection to just our computer?

Well make sure you gave superuser permissions to the app. It will ask you twice, once on connect and once on disconnect.

Dude, don't waste your time rooting your phone. It will mess up some feature. The camera will not work, and if it do work, the quality is crappy. You would't have that HD no more. The photo will have tiny pixel box.

I think that happens if you flash 2.2 (froyo) on your phone not by rooting (which should keep all your current settings).

Yes flashing means installing a brand new OS while rooting is giving more access to certain applications so they can perform duties that they could not do regularly (such as unconditional wifi tethering)

Think of rooting as using the admin account on a computer while flashing is a clean OS install.

where do you hear about this camera quality issue, i think this is the second thread I've seen this yet no one produces proof... I don't understand how just rooting would mess with quality of the hardware camera

TBH, using unrevoked is extremely easy. All you need is a filemanager (astro). Execute (the phone will be unresponsive for about 10 seconds) and it will let you know when you have root access (well... your apps).

I'm sure it was the same as before, confusing rooting with flashing.
