Question about notifications and sms

Ok i have a question, sorry if this has been asked before just point me in the right direction

How can I use my own custom sms/email alert sounds? I know how to get my own ringtones but i want to change my sms as well. the stock alerts suck.

Can i assign custom sms sounds for different contacts? if so how?
