Swype Port Here! Most Preferred EVO KB *with expiration fix*
 

Similar posts has been seen vaguely in a couple of places, but they are all convoluted and should be deleted in light of this one. This is a hyper-confirmed version I have worked to get tested.



1. Go to settings, and select Applications.

2. Check the box to "allow installation of non-Market applications."

3. Download the attached file using the web browser of your choice, or download it to your PC and transfer it to your SD card.

4. Navigate to the previously downloaded file using a file explorer like EStrong File Explorer or ASTRO click it.

5. Click "Install" to install.

6. Go back to the settings menu and click "Language & Keyboard."

7. Check the box next to Swype. Accept the prompt that pops up.

8. Open up any text field (text message, quick search, address bar, etc), and long press on the field.

9. Select "Input Method" from the pop-up.

10. Select "Swype" from the choices.

I urge everyone to try this. It might look intimidating or complicated, but once you learn how to use it, you probably won't look back.
Swype, for those who don't know, is pretty much the best darn thing to happen to keyboards since T9 (In fact the man who created it co-founded T9). The world record touch-screen keyboard text was sent using it (link below). It's a keyboard that's uber-fast and allows you to quickly and efficiently dish out texts or email or whatever..

do you keep getting popup messages that the keyboard is the wrong size?

I have a different apk that makes swype keep doing that.

Just move it to you sd card select it with a file manager like Astro and it will prompt you to install as long as you have your phone set up to install from Unknown Services located in the settings - Applications. Works perfect

Just for that reason it's better for you....coming from WINMO we have gotten use to Swype and would prefer to keep things as similar as possible moving to a new OS

I also came from winmo world. You should really try it...In my opinion it is way better than swype!

Swype works better for me on the Evo then the TP2, it's smoother and works quicker.

I have it installed, under the phone settings - language & keyboards I have swype checked but when I go to type something it uses the old keyboard....how do I tell it to use swype?

I tried it, I like Swype better. Swype handles going back to correct errors much better, AND it has a shift key...shapewriter seemed to only auto capitalize, and not let me decide any other way for myself.

This version works great, thanks OP. I had one that I tried that was on this forum before the phone came out, and all it would do is giver errors regarding screen resolution...no such errors anymore, works great.

i made the switch, only because the 'back' arrow takes me to the letter i need to correct, rather than erasing the whole word. (unless swype can do that)

If you just tap the back arrow it should erase the last letter.

Thanks, this is what I needed to know...it is working now. I was able to get to play with swype for a few days on my touch pro before the EVO came out and I fell in love with it

Been gettint an error saying that its not the right resolution. bummer... their has to be a working one. Is somebody actually getting this to work?

I found a file for Swype last night that gave me this error.

When I saw this post, I uninstalled the old one and installed the one in the OP. Everything is good to go now.

yeah i take that back. BOTH kb 'back arrows' will erase letters as you press the button. any way to press the back arrow to get to a certain letter without erasing letters along the way?

i.e. to correct the word: governkment to just erase the "k" without erasing "ment" or having to press exactly by the "k"

yeah i know which screen your talking about. its just the 'stock' keyboard has the 4 arrows and neither shapewriter and swype have no arrows on its main keyboard. it would be perfect if they did.

Well they do, but they also have smaller keys for the letters. If swype had smaller letter keys, then it would be waaay harder to use, ya know? It's funny, I used to think the same thing when I used it on my TP2 with a considerably smaller screen, so I hope the larger screen will eliminate this issue for me.

As do many, and hopefully on the official release it will.

If yall could please post your likes/dislikes, maybe I can get some reaally nice devs to work it up for the EVO until official comes out.

Then select it:

I understand everything but the "hold finger in the textbox" part.
I do not see a textbox or do not understand what it is.
I am a WIMO so please forgive my ignorance.

The textbox may be for example when you are sending a text (or searching, or URL input in your browser, etc...), press and hold on to the input area and a box will pop up, then select your input method which would be Swype.

i likeeverything about swype but i cant right curse wordslike even words i added in my user dictionary is there any settings i could change to make it work?
