A Question about Video/Movies...

So, I have a lot of movies in .avi on my PC.

I'm wondering what kind of format videos need to be in for Android/Evo 4G. Someone said mp4, but is that the only format that is supported?

Also, what program can I use to convert them to the right format and size for EVO? My work consists of about 4-5hrs of down-time out of an 8 1/2hr day, so we love the movies here. heh

I am bored as hell, so I decided to start converting some movies out of my collection and while I was laying here doing that you created this thread, so it was like perfect timing on both of us.

I'm going to try it now. Too bad we can't output them to a monitor

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

You should be able to output to either an HD tv or a monitor. If your monitor doesn't have an HDMI input you could purchase a HDMI to DVI converter, which are quite inexpensive as they are both digital signals.

The only problem with that is DVI doesn't support audio just video.

Out of 20 +/- Tv's and old monitors I have around here, only 1 has HDMI input. I thought the convertors were quite expensive, like $200? But I think you are right, anything from the Gallery should output correctly, even from a standard DVD, right?

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

Probably a dumb question on this about the resolution...
Can we not leave it at the default (say 720x480) and just view the movie in landscape??

The article seems to imply you need to get it under 480x800, which if I'm not mistaken would be portrait mode...where as landscape mode should give 800x480 right?

Thanks

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

Doh. I wonder if you can still get audio out of the headphone jack if you use the converter.

Bundo, HDMI to DVI converters are cheap because they are both digital. The expensive ones are the HDMI to Composite or Component because they need to convert from digital to analog.

I see. Not sure if most of my stuff isn't analog. Well, I have one with HDMI

You can have it 720x480, I'm pretty sure they are listing it that way because of how the specs are written... http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-...ne-p_4382.html

What I was wondering is why we can't load a 1280x720 movie and the phone downsize it appropraitely for the device or display the full resolution when outputing via HDMI...

That is a great software. I think i will be trying this also. Off hand, what size does it take a 4.7gb movie and output it to?

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

Oh yeah, handbrake doesn't decode so if you are ripping a dvd that needs decoding it won't work so just download a decoder like anydvd for example and it will decode the dvd once you put it in your dvd drive and you can run handbrake over it.

This is about taking movies you have and putting them onto your device. For example you're going on a plane flight and want in-trip entertainment, etc.

Of I see what you are saying, I think the difference would be if you intend on actually playing this on an external display, if not then it would take up extra space if all you ever gonna do is play it on your phone.

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

The only problem I have with the guide is that it advises that you turn off the option to keep aspect ratio. If you are as picky as me you'll be upset as it stretches the video. I would set the max width and have it keep the aspect ratio. You'll get black bars on movies, but at least they won't be stretched out. My Evo is waiting for me at home, so I'll be experimenting with handbrake tonight and tomorrow.

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

Ok, I got my Evo last night and did some tests with handbrake. Here's what I discovered:

-You need to get Meridian. Makes movie watching much more enjoyable and will allow you to resume where you left off even with multiple videos half way watched.

-Converted SD XviD to M4V and kept resolution the same (624x352). Plays fine and took about 3 min to convert a half hour show. (~150MB for 20 min TV Ep)

-Converted 720p MKV to native screen resolution width ( 800x448 ). Played great and converted at about 1.5x real-time.

-Converted 720p MKV to M4V while keeping resolution the same (1280x720). Plays flawlessly. Would probably be the best for HDMI output, but I still need to get an HDMI cable for testing. (~1GB/hr or 800MB for 40 min TV ep.)

UPDATE: I also tried a 1080p sample just for the hell of it. Meridian shows it as playable, but refuses to even start it.

Re: A Question about Video/Movies...

Okay, so I'm having an issue with Handbrake.

I pick my .avi file, UNcheck 'Keep Aspect Ratio', and then change the aspect ratio to 800x480. However, the ratio won't stay that way. So, if I have a file that is 652x264, I can't go above either one of those numbers when changing the aspect ratio.

Did I see some people saying that they kept their ratio? I HATE stretched movies, and honestly, I LOVE the black bars (widescreen), so should I just keep it as is??

If you hate stretched movies then you'll want to have Keep Aspect Ratio checked. Also if your movie is 652x264 then your best off just leaving it at default resolution. You won't gain anything by attempting to upscale it other than possibly larger file size. The 800x480 or 800x448 (16:9) is only really going to work when you are converting something from HD (1280x720 or 1920x1080 or 2.35:1 equivalents).

i was sort of wondering about this too but i have another concern:
normally when converting vids to a diff file type you lose sync btween vid and audio... is there an
app or player i can use on the evo to play files in avi? or is conversion the only option? also if any
one knows what format the evo records video in please let us know.

I keep putting in DVD's and then select that as the source but handbrake just seems to hang at scanning the disk, any ideas?

Handbrake will only convert a disc that's unencrypted. You'll need to strip CSS or use AnyDVD in order to convert video from a retail DVD.

I haven't had any issues with sync on any of my encodes using handbrake. I know the makers of TCPMP hope to bring it to Android at some point, but there are missing libraries or some such that prevent proper avi playback. To my knowledge conversion is the only option at this point, that may change in the future, especially with a device like the Evo getting a lot of attention.

There are free programs to remove CSS and rip DVD's. I haven't dealt with them in quite some time so I don't have any suggestions off the top of my head, but I'd look at videohelp.com for ideas.

Yep...you're right! I just loaded up my movie (Live Free or Die Hard) and it's absolutely PERFECT. No issues with Audio or Video what-so-ever.

I do have one question, though. In the past, when I've converted an AVI for use with my 6700, Mogul, TP, TP2, etc...the file has always come out a bit smaller maybe. Often times an AVI that is apprx 700mb ends up being closer to 500mb. However, after converting using Handbrake, my file has more than doubled in size! No HUGE deal, but I'd like to be able to fit more movies on there for now until I can get a bigger card. So, here's my question; Is it possible to keep the files around 700mb or below?

If not, that's okay, too. The picture is GORGEOUS!!!! Like I said, I just wouldn't mind having a bit more wiggle room.

Hope everyone is enjoying their EVOs!!
