No Data and Voice simultaneously

Is this a deal breaker for anyone?
http://androidcommunity.com/sprint-e...data-20100329/
Certainly isn't for me.

Latest info is that 3g voice and 4g data are being tested and likely to be ready before release.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Being that this is still the nicest phone i have seen for sprint i will still be buying it even if it does not support data and voice at the same time. I am confused however that the capability is there but they are basically disabling it. :(

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

I'm hoping for a skype app that'll let us do Voip as well as vid calls.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

So, why is Sprint saying they are testing it? Of course that press release also said it may not work.
Quote:

Additionally, since this device is dual CDMA/Wi-Max (with calls going over the CDMA network and data being handled via EVDO/Wi-Max), the ability to make voice calls and have a live data stream running concurrently is possible. As of right now Sprint says this feature is still in the testing phase. If the testing is successful, then Sprint will be the only CDMA carrier to have this feature available in the U.S. Market and it will also kill those AT&T ad's that laugh at Verizon and Sprint's incapability to run dual data and voice streams.
Oh well, neither does my Touch and neither did my 6700, Sammy a920, etc. I'm still drooling over the Evo....

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Well lets look at a few things:

1) What about doing data and calling via wimax? and they included a front camera for a reason so they have it planned. Maybe even their own VOIP app who knows...

2) It said it may change in firmware update

3) It is on Android which is open source..maybe with a few tweaks we may be able to hack it to do voice via cdma and wimax for data. For cdma this was a spec limitation but this limitation is not so we may be able to find a way around it

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Yes, it's a shame that I'll have to pay attention to the person I'm talking to and not ignore them and surf the web.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

I was thinking more along the lines of being able to still have mifi going so if one person is talking on the phone another person could still be using the internet on long car trips. Most people don't (i don't think) surf the internet on their phone while talking, AT&T just loves to make it look like everyone does it.

You got the right idea actually...I use my cellphone to tether via wifi for my laptop and when someone calls I loose internet..and worse is when that person who is calling is asking me for something that I gotta get on the internet..so I have to hang up and get back to them via instant messaging or email and can't help them on the spot.

It is not a deal breaker but it is desired.

But as stated its not a hardware or spec limitation, just software limitation..we will most likely have it hacked in not time.

I think this sums it up nicely :)

Again, though, if they're touting it as being able to act as a mobile hotspot, they should get the simultaneous voice/data working so that if you get a phone call, you don't disconnect the other 8 people that were using your data stream ](*,)

But, then again, their mobile hotspot app might just enable DDTM mode so that calls go straight to voicemail while it's acting as a hotspot (but that would kinda suck)...

Either way, definitely not a deal breaker for me...

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Well.........after seeing this thread I just tested out my TP2 (running SilenceROM_012) and I just used my voice and data at the same time!

@ first I called my voicemail and it worked, but thought I should call an actual person because I didn't know if calls to my voicemailcounted torwards it.....so I called my friend and told him what the deal was! He patiently waited for me and within a couple seconds I was online!

Don't know if it has to do with the custom rom or not but it surely does work for me! I even cleared out the cache in opera and did a soft reset before I called him and it still worked!

Hopefully there are some good Android roms out by the time this phone hits shelves because I'm pretty sure some chefs out there can manipulate the data and voice to do more than what its supposed to!

You cannot have data and voice at the same time over CDMA..it is a limitation of the specification(there is a revision that allows this but unlikely they will apply it). If you want to really test it start a huge file download then call. Also make sure its not using wifi for data.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

It doesn't work..............my bad!

What I did at first was call my friend and than I got online and it worked after soft reseting and clearing the cache! One thing I didn't even think about.........................I had the phone hooked up to my PC! Maybe that had something to do with it?!

Sorry for the hype! :silent:

Yeh we figured it was the case cause thats like explaining how a person saw a pig fly lol..just the limitation of CDMA specs...there is a revision of CDMA that may allow this wit h minor if not a firmware update(on carrier's end) but I don't think they'll waste time to implement it

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Yeah....sorry guys....but the funny thing is that when I hooked the phone back up to my PC it worked again! I only have it connected to the Windows Mobile Device Center, not through phone as modem or anything!

Another thing I noticed is if I have my phone connected to the PC and I try to update the weather it won't do it! (?)

Some weird stuff going on over here!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!

I believe when you connect to device center you get a data connection from the pc to the phone. that was a feature way back from the bad old days of pda's with no wifi :)

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

This is only upon release. Sprint doens't have an app to do it. They want the developers to come up for some amazing apps to utilize the hardware. Evo is no doubt capable of video conferencing. Wimax for data and CDMA for voice.

Quote:

For example, an application developer might create an app that allows a customer to simultaneously watch a streaming sporting event while pulling down stats and conducting a video chat with a friend.

It would be nice to be able to use data and talk at the same time, but it is definitely not a deal breaker. I will get this phone day 1.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

no real deal breaker here. i was hoping for it though so i could use google voice on my tp and have data provided by wimax thru evo so i could have my tp for work and evo for personal and only pay one bill. oh well. as soon as phone hits a store, i will travle there and get it. since work has me on the road, i wont be waiting for it to hit my home area.

I really hope they can get it worked out within a few months of release.

Preferably in a couple of weeks. Would make for great PR.

Thanks elephant.

they even said when they were showing off the evo that it wasnt for sure yet. Still needs testing and a bit of software to run.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

There could be a few factors behind it. Im pretty sure the phone probably doesnt charge while doing this and may kill the phone battery quickly. Now if they can get this to work and also allow the phone to still to charge while doing this or mifi.

Why wouldn't it? even the TP2 does MIFI and charge...I would expect a newer device to be able to as well

well u know what would work. just setup google voice and have all your calls forwarded to it. if ur on data and u get a call using a data stream it wouldnt be inturpted correct?

GV is just a call forwarding function. You are still using your 1X to make calls through GV. If/When Google becomes a full VOIP.....watch out world!!!

The TP2 is also a 3g device. Who knows if 4g drains the battery faster.

I don't understand why the article says VOIP calls will be allowed while using data. I thought VOIP was like Skype, not cell phone calls.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Ignore that website its a crock but it iwll have voice over 3g and data over 4g if you live in a 4g area. Thats been known from the start. They werent sure if it would be ready by launch time but looks like it will be and running on a modified 2.1 so june hurry up so all the rumors can die and we finally get what we see

I hope that the testing turns out a success, even if I don't use it often. The more features the better, we don't want it like the iPhone (IE: Has features but can't use them)

Because *eventually* (key word here), all calls will be VOIP on 4G networks, it's cheaper for the carriers, and eventually the consumers. However, the Wimax network is nowhere NEAR up to that task, and neither it nor LTE will be ready for exclusively VOIP calls until probably 2012 at the earliest.

Re: No Data and Voice simultaneously

Just to clarify for everyone the Voice/Data will work only if your in a 4G coverage area...otherwise is will be one or the other...Yeah, it's not quiet like GSM but its close enought for me since this phone is CDMA...Weird though, does anyone get text msg's when there on a voice call sometimes? I do...I'll hear it in my earpiece when some has sent me a text...either that or the txt was coming in right before I took the call...hmm...

That is correct. Only if you have 4g.
