aww u took the words out if my mouth.. ill state it this way,there have been malware in the market for example the last large scale infection was from malware being in the market and there may be even more to be found since Google often doesn't do anything about malware until a large scale infection occurs which is a shame, they should really change that.

Wow, times are changing... more people commenting that they use anti-virus than not. I remember when every answer was "we don't need that on smartphones yet."

I actually think we don't need them, as long as users take caution and don't download odd pieces of software. Every infected app seems to be a clone of a popular app, something that exploits sex, or a pack of ringtones/wallpapers. There's definitely a target audience they're going after here. The infected apps also seem to all be from no-name developers who spam the market with junk, often from Asian countries.

By the time we have a real virus problem on our hands, I bet google will implement some sort of protection for consumers and build it right into the market.

But, as someone else noted here, we have such powerful phones now with plenty of memory, so it doesn't hurt to be overly cautious. You never know when the attack will move on to the next level. I just thought it was interesting how things have changed so quickly with smartphone safety.

Anti virus only slows things down just like ur pc. Eats up too much memory for me. Any problems down the road just do a hard reset.

Unix/Linux? Isnt Android using this? I tought virus doesnt come to this OS.

There has never been any virus on Apple. Why is that?

I use Microsoft security essentials on my 1GB gateway box from 2006 that I upgraded to Win7. it has a very light memory footprint, much lighter than Norton or McAfee but just as effective.
there have been malware outbreaks on Apple as well, in both iOS and OSX, u should read ZDNet more these kinds of things are covered all the time.

There are definitely viruses on Macs, just not a lot of them. This is only because virus/spyware makers go where the people go and usually that's PCs. Linux has a microscopic percentage of the overall desktop users so virus makers don't target them. As Macs get more popular, you'll start seeing more malware written for Macs.

So yes an android phone is Linux/unix based, but as it gets more popular, more people will write malware for it.

In addition to Windows being prevalent and therefore getting the most exposure to malware/viruses/worms, it also has the default account set up during installation as an Administrator (root) account. Mac doesn't do that by default, so along with a greater percentage of users, crackers etc. get the added benefit of having a lot more access once inside the system.

That's true, though even standard accounts in windows can get infected with spyware, though it can only effect that user and not the rest of the system. I'm sure the dame would be true for osx.

This is also the same for our phones. We don't have admin (root) privileges on our phones by default but a virus wouldn't need that to steal all of your contact info.

My question for lookout is how good are they? Have there been any tests ran to see if they even catch all the known android viruses?

In the end just be careful of what you install.
