Is the Evo3D worth it?
I am VERY close to jumping networks just to get this phone. I don't know I'm kind of impulsive like that. I just want to make sure it's worth it from real users who own this thing.
I am getting very mixed reviews online. Some people say the cameras make the phone uncomfortable and weird, and the 3D isn't that great, and battery is horrendous, and the 2MP 3D pics kinda suck, and the 5MP 2D pics aren't that great, and blah blah. Then some people say it's a good phone and the 3D is better than expected, blah blah. From you guys who actually own the phone, how is it? is the 3D awesome? does it have decent viewing angles, are the dual-cameras that awkward? do you miss the kickstand? is the screen washed out and not that great?? real users opinions are what matter to me, not bgr and engadget and stuff. I am currently reviewing a Sensation for HTC (look for my upcoming article on the front page) and I love it. It's fast, awesome, screen is great, 8mp camera is just amazing, the form factor, everything. If I stay on tmobile I am getting this phone. So how's the 3D? |
I love my 3d but I really hate this battery life. I heard its worse battery life than sensation. I hope it gets better with some updates. Other than battery this phone is a beast and the 3d is a plus.

Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
For me, the 3d is a nice feature to tout, but its not all that practical. You can take 3d pix and videos and it looks good if you know how to look at it, but its not all that impressive. you have to tell the person you are showing it to, that they have to look at it a certain way... its almost like telling a joke and having to explain it afterword for them to get it. Also, not much of a benefit for the pix and self made 3d videos if you cant share them, and they can only be looked at on your phone. I do not know many people that have 3d devices.
The 3d movies and youtube vids one the otherhand, ARE pretty impressive and do not cause to much strain on the eyes. (the 3d does not bother my eyes at all, but sometimes does for the people I am showing.) Again though, this seems (for now at least) as a feature for oohs and ahhs until the technology is more widely adopted. Spiderman 3d was boring but looked interesting with the 3d effect. Personally, I would get the device if you liked the Sensation, because you cant really go wrong anyway. I am not sure on the quality of the camera on the sensation, but the Evo 3d camera is a definite step up from the original evo and looks pretty good if you ask me... low light pix still kinda suck though. other than the camera, everything else is similar in terms of performance... My 2 pennies. As far as the battery life, I have no idea why everyone else is having issues with that... my battery is waaay better than my OG evo I went from about 10 hours to about 18 |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
In my opinion you will not make a bad decision going with this phone. I have taken probably 50 pics already of my daughter( who is 2 years old and always moving. What i disliked about the EVO camera was that it didn't take any good pictures with moving objects and the best pictures were outside only. With the EVO 3d you get great pics inside and outside and while objects are moving. I don't understand what could be awkward about the two camera, both of them are only in use when shooting in 3d only, In which it prompts you that you can only shoot in 3d in landscape mode which is understandable.
As for the phone, it is so smooth there are a few bugs, but that comes with any new device only time will smash those bugs. I haven't experienced lag with doing anything. Going from games to phone calls back to games to the camera, everything is smooth. And you just have to love all the HTC widgets which are cool to show off, I particularly like the photo grid. Battery life is cool with me. I am always near a charger. I listen to music, do a few races in a game, check email every 5 mins and text, and it doesn't get to the red til 2. I feel that is heavy usage seeing as though the screen is on most of the time. I have been able to stream my amazon cloud with the screen off and 4g on for a solid 8 hours with out having to put it on the charger. so for me the battery all depends on how much the screen is on for you. Hope i helped with your decision |

all i can say is the E3D RULES!!!!!! |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
It's an awsome phone. As far as battery life, if you know how to manage the sensation (push mail, BT, and all the things in life to sync to), the battery is not that bad. I get a full day out of it with moderate use.
Personally, if I had the money, I would upgrade ALL my phones to the E3D! |

3VO > All other phones

Overall the speed and Sense 3.0 is what makes this device unreal. You cant bog it down! Have you gone to a Sprint store and played with one yet? EDIT: One last thing... I like the frame and casing of the Sensation better. The rounded look is much more palatable to me. The Evo 3D looks to squared off... But that is minor aesthetics. |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
Thanks guys for the responses.
Based on this though it almost seems like I should stick with the Sensation, the only "better" thing about the Evo3D is the 3D, and most of you are saying it's not really that amazing or useful, just kinda fun? Or is there more to this? |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
Like many others, I think the 3d is kind of gimmicky but a nice feature. For the cheap price (120 bucks with case), it was worth it just to get the tasty dual core.
Battery life for me is on par for the Evo using all the standard tricks. -e. |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
Yes, just yes :)
|
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
The 3D is nothing special. The EVO 4G was so much better of a jump coming from the TP2.

3d is gimmicky, but cool. Phone is really fast. Sense 3.0 is beautiful and my battery life has improved.
Overall, I love my phone. |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
I went from a Hero to this, and it is unbelievable how much of an upgrade it is. I do miss the physical keys the hero had, but other than that, I love it.
In regards to battery, it is hard for me since where I work, I am on roaming, and that KILLS the battery. I can't make it 8 hours when roaming. But my hero didn't do any better. I think it is more the data roaming that actually drains it as bad. But if you aren't in a hurry to get a new phone, you can always wait to see how the next big phone stacks up (Moto Photon or SGII). Then make a decision. |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
Depends on what you are coming from and if you have a full upgrade. If you have the evo 4G and had to pay full price for the 3VO, I would have to say not really worth the upgrade. All the great roms and hardware for the 4G still make it one of the best phones out. However, only 200 for the 3VO, I would say yes its worth it. There are a few bugs but the phone is SO smooth. Even without all the great features that come with custom roms and root I have still been enjoying the phone tons. I was always searching for a rom to move as smooth as this and the only thing I can think of was the 1.2 stable deck rom. The phone is that good stock. The 3D is cool but not worth leaving a close to comparable phone. Can't lie, still pretty cool and fun to show off to those that don't appreciate the hardware of phones out now. Its what this phone is capable of that makes it great and will make it even better with time and great Devs.

Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
If the sole reason your getting it its for the 3d I'd say pass. The 3d isn't that great (my opinion) However it is a very good phone. I would argue its probably one the best phones available . A couple things you should know battery kind of sucks, music player doesn't work (my wife, brother, and I all have the same skipping issue) the font size is small, and most programs aren't full screen. Lol thats a lot but the phone is pretty sick and these are issues that can be fixed with updates

Those of you getting over 10hrs on the evo 3d must not be using the phone or my phone is just defective. I use my phone for several phone calls, constant texting, using couple apps here and there and some internet surfing with bluetooth off and the most I have gotten is a little over 7hrs on a good day. That just sucks. I was getting at least 10 on my evo 4g. As of now I will probably will be returning it unless it receives update that helps with battery life before my 30 days is up.

Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
hell yea!!! dual core 1.2ghz cpu, 1gb RAM, QHD screen (with no Pentile crap Moto pulls) bigger battery even though its a hit and miss on duration (pretty good for me), dedicated camera button, and Im also also loving 3D much more than I thought, its really cool and the center of the attention at work lol.
That said, 3G speeds SUCK!!! I hope HTC fixes this with a radio update. Also, with the 3VO you are garanteed timely updates for at least a year thanx to HTC and their flagship care |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
I don't think 3D on a smartphone is at a point yet that justifies jumping carriers, especially if you're happy with your current network. After all, you're on T-Mobile and the Sensation 4G is basically a nicer looking E3D without the 3D. That being said, I actually think the 3D is awesome, but content is severely lacking and it will likely be like that for a year or two until 3D TVs really take off and carry over to other interests.
You can convert 3D movies for the E3D, play a handful of gameloft 3d games (they seem to be converting their hits), take and view 3D pics and video, and watch YouTube 3D videos - all of these are limited in quantity. The good thing is it seems you can view 3D video made for 3DTVs (glasses required) right on the E3D (w/o glasses) - though you will have to convert format unless watching through YouTube. Also, not all 3D is created equal. I've seen some amazing 3D on YouTube and some not so amazing. So if you're going to test the 3D, make sure you view it from various sources. I recommend the Ocean Circus video found in the nature playlist on youtube.com/3d. Feels like you're swimming with the fish and turtles! Btw, on device, 3D pics and video look very good to me. The added depth makes me feel like I'm looking at a magic act since I'm not wearing glasses to see it. Also makes me feel like I'm there more compared to looking at a flat image, does that make sense? Best way to really see the difference is to take a pic in 3D, then press the 2D button to see how that same pic compares. The issue is when you go to send/share them in 2D (nice that it saves both 2D/3D btw), they're lower in resolution than if you took the pic normally at full res (1920x1080 compared to 2560x1440). Then again, that usually isn't a big deal for smartphone cameras, since they suck when viewed at full res anyway. Viewing angles suck, obviously, but I think it's a decent payoff since it's a smartphone we're talking about, not a TV where it would be more of a concern. You will not be able to view/watch pics/movies with a friend at the same time though, or at least you better be very friendly with them and basically touching cheeks ha. Battery life seems fine to me. Like with the original EVO, I think people are using it more like a shiny new toy right now and after it starts being used regularly, battery complaints will dwindle down. Also, I think there was a bug at laucnh that kept the E3D awake even when the screen was turned off. A few updates have been released since then and I no longer see identical awake/up times under battery status. 3D will drain a lot more battery, as it does on the Nintendo 3DS. Screen seems fine to me. It's super LCD, so I assume it's at least better than the EVO 4G's standard LCD, which was, in fact, washed out. If you're using the Sensation, then you likely know what to expect with everything else. If you're happy with T-Mobile and don't necessarily need 3D, perhaps it's better to stick with them. If you're enjoying the Sensation, but are tired of T-Mobile, the EVO 3D is equally as great on another carrier. I highly recommend testing Sprint service in your area though, even if you were with them years ago. IMO, they've regressed somehow in the past year, at least in my area. |

I'm in Houston, where it seems all 4 networks get great service. I know tmobile and Sprint have really good coverage here. I am torn because I actually do want the 3D stuff, just wanted to make sure it was actually really cool and not like "meh, I guess that's ok" I am currently looking for a decent price on the phone and already have a SERO hookup, so you might see me in these forums a lot. If they can integrate the 3D drivers into a CM7 ROM then this could be an amazing phone. I'll keep checking this thread as to opinions and experiences though. |
Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
I love the phone so far coming from the TP2. But only one thing, the speaker is weak!

Re: Is the Evo3D worth it?
Phone quality and satisfaction all depends on what the individual looks for in a device. I think it is safe to assume that this is an awesome phone, with breakthrough technology that is still developing. The 3D feature was an "oooh" for me, but wasn't what made me upgrade from OG EVO to this version. Personally, I like the case, think its sleeker, and LOVE the speed. Its unrooted version is better than my rooted EVO version...that says a lot because once developers get in and root this device and offer battery tweaks and so forth I think it will be incredible! Also battery life is based on the user. I only charge mine overnight. I take off the charger about 6am and it doesn't need to go back on charger until about 8pm. IF I am in an area where it is constantly searching for signal, then the battery does drain a lot faster. I think you won't go wrong with any HTC device you choose. They make awesome devices!
