do this
*NOTE* if you do not have SDK installed, extract these files to a folder (ie, c:\sdk\tools)(put the .img is the same folder)
-from bootloader, make sure it says fastboot usb
-execute this command: fastboot flash recovery recovery-twrp-shooter-1.0.0.img

download this
CFi ShellToys > Download 45-Day Trial

right click on adb in the c:\sdk\tools folder
look for shell tools/ cmd prompt
it will bring up cmd and type this
fastboot flash recovery recovery-twrp-shooter-1.0.0.img

i cant make it any easier

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

found this vid on xda

I walked my friend through obtaining S-OFF and Root on his EVO 3D earlier and decided to record it. It is rather long because I went through all of the steps, including installing the Android SDK. I figured I would share this with everyone since it might help someone with the process.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

I must be unlucky. When running Revolutionary, it gets to Waiting for fastboot, then my phone just sits there on fastboot usb and does nothing. Any suggestions?

Got it! I had to manually go into Windows and point it to the downloaded htc driver.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

I install Android SDK before and it I had to went to Mars and Moon to get all those Java stuff. Then it ask for Eclipise addin? I dont know if I want to mess up my computer for all this.

I guess I will wait.

Someone said when the EVO 4G is rooted, then everything like the Sprint Hotspot will work. I hope for the same with the 3D.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

I found it easier to flash recovery via the flashable zip. For the life of me I couldn't get fastboot to work.
