Re: "Rooting" for the Droid Eris

Can anyone here shed some light regarding the wifi "Capable" aspect of this device. From what I have found so far, I would need to have a separate item to use the wifi. Is the wifi built in or not? Thanks, I am looking into this device for a Renual/Upgrade for the discount.

Re: "Rooting" for the Droid Eris

Wifi is built-in - 802.11 b/g. No need for a separate component. Until a root "kit" is available though you won't be able to do wifi tethering as well as a host of other enhancements with root access.

Hope that helps...

Thanks, thats good to know.
I have purchased WilkingHotSpot for my 6800.
I have my PC and 3 of my other 6800s online.
The app will allow up to 5 at one time..

That is the only setback for me leaving WinMo..
Roughly $100.00 USD worth of WinMo software.
Maybe in time there will be a bootloader that will allow selecting any os at boot time...

Thanks for the help..

Re: "Rooting" for the Droid Eris

Hey all,

WINMO convert here. (Was active on the HTC Apache and 6800 threads).
I need to get up to speed on Android as the Eris is my 1st new phone for a long while

Newbie question: What exactly is "Rooting"?

Also, anyone know how I can access the SD card from the PC?
I see in MY COMPUTER it comes up as E: drive when I plug int he phone (USB) but when I click on it, it says to insert a drive.
I then plugged it into a PC with Active Sync, and under MOBILE DEVICE, it opens up but is empty.

Lastly, is there a Explorer type app so I can manually explore the SD on the phone?

Lokoing forward to getting up to speed and playing with this thing.

Re: "Rooting" for the Droid Eris

can some body get me a dump of the eris. i will root it if you want.
what i need:

a dump of the /system folder
the init.rc and the build.prop

if you can dump the whole thing that would be a bonus.

download the android sdk for android.com. find a adb driver and install it. plug in your phone. open a command line and go to the tools directory in the sdk
execute:
Code:
adb pull /system system
Code:
adb pull init.rc init.rc
this should pull the system folder and put it in directory called system inside your tools directory and also a file named init.rc

if you can get the whole dump
Code:
adb pull / dump
should copy the root filesystem to a directory called dump

this is a guide for adb on the g1 the same principal should apply to the eris http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010
