Re: Most Recent Leaked HTC 2.1 ROM

No, its supposed to be used in place of the VZW minutes over the data connection. Hence, why the new Nexus one does not require a cell phone connection to make calls when you use WiFi. When I had the OEM ROM on my phone it went through Google Voice and didn't use my minutes at all. The calls also appeared in my outgoing call log on GV. Now my outgoing calls do not appear there nor does my GV number pop up on the caller ID.

WRONG.
GV is not a VoIP application. All is does is allow incoming calls from multiple numbers to be collated to a single inbound number with rules based on who the caller is, and voice-2-text voice mail. As for outbound calls, what it does is call a Google switchboard which provides a dial-tone hand-off, and redials the target (contact) phone number (just like Sly-dial). However it does this invisibly behind the scenes.

Again, it is NOT a VoIP app, and never advertised itself as one.

There are indeed VoIP apps out there, that will allow you to make calls over IP and thus not using airtime (assuming you have an unlimited data plan, or are using Wi-Fi).

However, you can combine Google-Voice with some apps, such as GIZMO, in order to achieve the result that you desire.

Well first of all, I never said it was VOIP. And second, what is the point of making a call through Google Voice if everytime I select that option on my phone my regular cell phone number pops up on the other persons caller ID and it still uses my minutes? Seems rather worthless.

1) Any call over IP (over Wifi for example) is VoIP (hence Voice Over IP).

2) The point of making a call through Google Voice is to make an outbound call FROM your GV number instead of your own phone number, so that if you're doing business through a GV number people won't see your personal phone number. (Hmmm.... looks like they made some changes so it only works with SMS for now. Though you can call the GV access number and make an outbound call manually with the GV number).

Minutes has NOTHING to do with it. Furthermore, Google developing any app to circumvent the cellular carriers would be insanely stupid, as they are counting on carriers to carry the Google branded phones. (Dur).

It's not worthless at all... you're just not using it as designed.

Re: Most Recent Leaked HTC 2.1 ROM

I thought the whole point of what they were getting at with the new Nexus One was giving us the option to tell the cell phone companies we don't NEED them.... which is why I thought you could make calls using it without cell phone service if you had a WiFi connection.

I also liked the feature of having my GV number show up for work when I don't want people having my personal cell phone number. Apparently that's not the case anymore. Also, Google bought out Gizmo when they acquired Grand Central... not sure if they are planning to integrate.

You still can do that.... just not with Google-Voice. That's not the app for it.
There are several VoIP applications available on and off the Android market that will allow you to make calls over a WiFi connection.

From what I understand, Google Plans on integrating Gizmo with GV (to do exactly what you want). Actually you can do that now (with some extra configuration) if you already have a Gizmo account. (Unfortunately Google has temporarily frozen Gizmo account registration after they took over).

It surprises me the GV doesn't show the GV number when making outbound calls from a cell phone (when using the app... again, you can do that manually by calling your GV number from your registered cell and hitting option 2 to make an outbound call, though you have to manually type in the number). I know that it does show the GV phone # when TEXT from your phone (as I have an anonymous Google-Voice account specifically for clandestine texts to screw with friends, etc...).
