Advantages of flashing a new radio?

What are the advantages of flashing a new radio besides supposedly saving battery..I am still using 1.11, I pretty much have flashing ROMs down and even editing them. And now I am looking into building my own, but why flash a new radio? I've read that it gives better signal strength, but these all sound like signal booster battery tweak hoaxes.

I ran into a couple issuse trying to get a bkgd on all tabs and it crashed my diamond so that lead me to this issue..

Also coming from the above mentioned radio which should I switch too, if need be?

I'm in Virginia Beach on Mighty's 4.8 ROM and Sprint if that helps
