Heaven and Earth have something against me... Phone calls and text messages

Ever wondered what it's like to have a phone that doesn't receive phone calls or text messages consistently? I sure do; my old HTC Touch and my new Touch Diamond have done it . Fortunately, I don't think the issue is "phone-related" so much as it is "carrier-related" (thanks Sprint ) but I'm asking for help here because we all know how competent tech support is (though I probably could jimmy out a free Touch Pro, not like it would do me any good!) and we all know, they would NEVER admit a problem on their end. I'm 'pretty sure' this phone does not go into a comatose like my Touch did (ie: NOT wake up from 'sleep' for anything) but this phone clearly did not fix my primary complaint with the Diamond :-\. In case you are wondering, I'm out in Pullman, WA (yes, surprisingly, that is a city ) and it is likely the cause of my problems. Sometimes I see FULL 1x service in my room, sometimes 1 bar or none... Same with EvDO (Rev. A btw) but that doesn't matter for phone calls/texts. Maybe it's oscillating between two towers or something?

I don't really care why it's messed up, I only care about fixing the darn thing so any advice? I'm thinking about flashing to a new radio but 1) I can't find any (honestly, didn't look too hard) and 2) not sure if it would help?

Yes, I can force roaming but I like EvDO and then I'm just being really inconvenienced...
