Ringtones for Known and Unknown Callers

I used to have a Treo 800w. Worst phone I ever had, but I digress. One thing it had that I liked was that in Settings:Sounds and Notifications:Event it had known callers and unknown callers. So, you could specify different rings if someone called who was not in your contact list and a different ring for people in your contact list. If you already had a custom ring specified for a contact, that ring would override the default.

So I had many callers with specfic rings assigned in contacts. But, I really liked the fact that when the phone rang I always knew if the caller was in my contracts or not by the ring.

The Diamond does not have the option in Settings:Sounds and Notifications:Event. It only has phone incoming call. I assumed it was a function of WM 6.1 but I guess not or it was left out of the stock Diamond. Is there a way to get that option through a tweak of some kind?

I do not know of a tweak but if someone else does, I would love that functionality as well. I remember when I had my Treo 700wx I used to use "Who Are You" by the Who for unknown calls... still have the custom ringtone that I made for it :)

Re: Ringtones for Known and Unknown Callers

I also used custom sounds for incoming email and text messages in place of the wav files on the phone but when I try to assign one of my custom wavs to incoming messages, they don't play. They are wav files just like the stock ones on the phone, they are located in the same directory (windows) on the phone as the stock wav files for such messages and they are of similar size but there is no sound when they are selected.

Any ideas?

The "Unknown" caller feature was on my Mogul and my treo 800w, wish it was on the Diamond, I used "Who can it be now" for the ringtone.

I noticed that two entries were using treo.mid as a ring tone, so I changed the Unknown Caller ring tone to unique.mid and did another export. The only key that had unique.mid listed as a ring tone was as follows:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\PlmORingTone 2]
"Sound"="\\Windows\\Unique.mid"

I have also zipped up the second export and attached, for your reference. In the folder Sounds.reg is from the first export, Sounds1.reg is from the second import (with unique.mid set as the ring tone for Unknown Caller).

"VibrateWithRingerOn"=dword:00000000
"PlmO"=dword:00000002
"Duration"=dword:00000001
@="Phone: Unknown Caller"

Comparing the two keys in the Notifications registry key as below:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Notifications\Phone]
"Wave"="\\Windows\\Treo.mid"
"PalmNotify"=dword:00000000
"Options"=dword:80000000
"VibrateWithRingerOff"=dword:00000001
"VibrateWithRingerOn"=dword:00000000
"PlmO"=dword:00000001
@="Phone: Known Caller"
"Duration"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Notifications\{9339 5D1D-1E98-4784-9AD2-F236BE9BF32E}]
"Wave"="\\Windows\\Unique.mid"
"PalmNotify"=dword:00000000
"Options"=dword:80000000
"VibrateWithRingerOff"=dword:00000001
"VibrateWithRingerOn"=dword:00000000
"PlmO"=dword:00000002
"Duration"=dword:00000001
@="Phone: Unknown Caller"

The only real difference is the dword value for the PlmO key... known caller is 1 and unknown caller is 2. I am leaving work for now but I will be back online here in an hour or so and will check with you and see how far you got.

Thanks again for trying to figure this out.

Re: Ringtones for Known and Unknown Callers

im stuck i need to know how the "known Caller" notification calls its ringer from the sounds key.

since there was only one option there before there was no string value to show how it called the ringer.

Re: Ringtones for Known and Unknown Callers

Does this help:

At the w06 registry, at HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/RingTone0/ you can
set the default phone ringtone.
At the HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/KnownCallerRing0/ you can set the
ringtone for your contacts.

So, by default, the "sounds and notifications" control panel is just setting up "RingTone0"
Go there, set the ringer up the way you want it for Known callers (callers in your contacts list without caller-specific ringtones) and then, in a registry editor, copy all the stuff in RingTone0 into KnownCallerRing0. Now go back into the sounds and notifications CP, and change the ringer to something else. That will be used for *unknown* calls, while the other ringer (the one you set first) will be used for known calls, unless the contact has a ringer, in which case *that* ringer will be used.

Make sense? It has to, it's from Microsoft http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/ima...ilies/wink.gif

i was trying to get the "roaming" ringer going too

Re: Ringtones for Known and Unknown Callers

I think this mentions the same thing, just worded a bit different. But I have no clue, just trying to help...

"Here are the registry settings for UNKNOWN callers.

Set your normal ringtone from the Sounds panel, browse to HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\KnownCallerRing0 and make sure your Sound string points to the file you want. Now go to HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\Ringtone0 and change Sound to point to a different file. Wait 10 seconds, soft reset et voila.

To test it, I removed my home number and called my device, rings with the unknown caller. Re-add your number and it will ring with the known tone."

Does HTC even make a device that does it?

Either way, nice work all of you so far...

I don't remember anymore. Would be nice if it did and one of our fellow geekers with a Mogul hooked us up with a reg dump though :)

i asked in the mogul section :)

on a side note. i found a bunch of cool notification settings you can tweak. like the duration of the led flashing
