Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

Sprint is sending me a diamond as a free replacement for my touch but I just noticed in the guide that there is no analog roaming in the diamond! Does anyone else care about this? Did anyone even know? I haven't seen this mentioned in any threads (I searched) and it really effects me. Does anyone know if the touch pro has analog roaming? Any of you diamond owners notice that you have new dead spots because of this? I realize analog is going away, but in more remote areas, analog is the only service still in many places, at least that's my impression. What do others think? Any of you in the more remote areas tried a diamond yet?

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

umm, I'm not even sure the 6700 had analog. I can tell you for sure that the 6800 and 6900 don't. the cell companies moved away from that a while ago, same reason as analog tv going away.

I think your referring to "roam only". there's a reg hack to enable that floating around, but it's still digital.

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

both the touch and the mogul have analog roaming discussed in their user guide, this comes right out of the 6800 guide

"When you are off the Sprint National Network and are within a roaming partner's coverage area, the Roaming icon ( ) is shown in the title bar. On the Phone screen, you will also see a “Digital Roaming” status when you are roaming in a digital network or an “Analog Roaming” status when you are within an analog network coverage area."

Do you think this is incorrect doc? maybe, but I could swear I've seen my touch in analog roam mode in the boonies!

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

The analog network is no longer customer accessable in the majority of the United States now. Digital service covers 98% of the population now, so a poll about analog services is outdated, I suppose?

Edit: With the remaining analog services being "turned off" completely next month (if I remember correctly), those that are in need of analog, should look into a booster kit. Though they won't be needed for much longer, if the big three keep pumping towers out.

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

My old PPC6700 did NOT have ANALOG roaming. I did miss it in a few rural areas of my territory, but got along without it. VZW sent a letter out in February announcing that they were not supporting ANALOG effective March 2008. Digital has improved to the point that analog is rarely needed. I work in some pretty remote places- and have found that if the digital is not available, it will be within a few minutes of driving.

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

your right, it is in the pdf manual, but not the printed one.

the only sprint phone that still has analog (AMPS) is the samsung m300

on the mogul box it states, only CDMA 800mhz/1.9ghz

As far as I am concerned analog is dead. I haven't had a phone that supported AMP in years.

Re: Just noticed the diamond has no analog roaming!

Thanks for the responses everyone, they got me googling and I learned that AMPS coverage, while better in rural areas, is in fact a rapidly dying, soon to be extinct, network. The FCC apparently issued a ruliing that allowed cell phone carriers to shutdown their analog AMPS 800mhz service as of Feb 18, 2008, "the AMPS sunset". Most carriers have already shut down their AMPS systems and the network will most likely be history by the end of the year. The biggest problems caused by the sunset were apparently in alarm system backup analog cell phones and older onstar car systems. In my area, Utah, alltel will end analog service by the end of this month! Guess this won't be a good excuse for Sprint to upgrade me to a touch pro (lol)! I actually now wonder if the fact my old touch had analog support was the reason by battery drained so quick when I was in lousy service areas!!!! I did often set my touch to sprint only for just that reason!

If you want to read more about sunset dates http://www.mountainwireless.com/analog.shtml
