How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Ok guys please do not crucify me here, but I need help freeing up my memory on the device. The only program I have loaded on the phone was Adv. Config. Tool. I only have 18.6 mb out of 91.6. So here is what I need to know.
1. Which files can I delete to free up some space from the device memory? 2. Can you run programs from your internal memory? Please guys help me please. thanks in advance |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Yeah... the developers of this device were smoking something strong! Where did all that glorious memory go? My Dell Axim x51v has 256MB of RAM (192MB for Storage/49MB for programs). Why did they allocate so much for Program use and so little for Storage? (91MB Storage/214MB for Programs). I know I didn't install 85MB of stuff!!!
It makes no sense to me! I'm down to 5MB after installing only six applications to main memory. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
This is almost a deal breaker for me and may force me to return the phone for a pro.
I have certain apps that will not run if they are not installed into the main memory. A few apps installed and I have almost run out of memory. As a matter of fact I had to uninstall one program because voice command would not restart after a soft reset because it said there was not enough memory available. Unless there is a way to create a clean rom with the non-essential apps running on the flash memory as well as the cache for opera and sprint navigation, the phone is almost useless in its current configuration. Like the previous poster asked, what was Sprint thinking? |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Good grief, I am not a power user by any stretch, and I am down to 18.0. MB. I only have a few small programs installed and need to install a few more. I want to install a calendar program and Sprite backup.
I just may have to return it. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Hopefully one of the PPCGeek Techs might chime in to shed some light on this matter. Maryanne I think you can run some of your programs from your internal memory.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
what about doing a hard reset? then do a soft reset before customizations? that is what i did on my cingular 8525 (hermes) and it worked great.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
ok I have
microsoft .net cf 3.5 oz instant messaging j.s. advanced configuration tool 3.2 And I'm running @ 18.6 mb out of 91.6 |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
If you have been using Opera quite a bit it will cache all the info in the phone's storage memory. Go into Opera and clear the cache, this should open up more memory for you.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
A clean up utility will go a long way towards freeing up space. It will find/delete temp files, internet debris and such. Two popular ones are MemMaid (what I'm using) and SKTools. They are commercial products, but do come with a trial period.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
I just did a hard reset and then soft reset the device twice to prevent the customization software from being installed. That stuff takes up about 20MB of space! Now without that extra crap, I have 76MB of storage space in main memory. After my normal sync of contacts, calendar and files, I am left with 64MB. I'm much happier now.
Now if Sprint would change my phone status so I can get it activated, I'd be very happy. It's stuck in limbo as still being listed as 'processing' even though I've had it since Friday. It cannot be activated in that status. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
FYI ... I just found out that a hard reset DOES NOT wipe out the Internal Storage space. For some reason, I just assumed it would. This is better news than I ever could have imagined !
|
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Hey JohnBecker, i'm glad i'm not the only one that can't get this thing activated. I received mine on friday as well & have been told the same thing as you, that it's still processing. Hopefully tomorrow they can figure it out. How long do you wait after you hard reset it, to do a soft reset to not let the sprint stuff get installed?

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
You have to do it before the 3sec. or it will customization.
Thanks T M Z |

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
when you do a hard reset, and do a soft to stop customization, don't you have to do something w/ an ext rom to install certain cabs that the phone needs?

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
The Diamond doesn't have an Extended ROM area. I found out that Opera doesn't get installed if you reset it before it customizes, but that's not a problem. Just look in the \Windows directory for WM6_PPC_HTC_Opera9_WWE.CAB file. I installed Opera to the storage card and saved nearly 10MB of space! :)
Sprint TV and a few others won't get installed either. There are a few text files to look for in the Windows directory if you want to see what doesn't get installed. Look for: Config.txt, Config_AP.txt, Config_operator.txt and Config_PT.txt. They list what is installed during the customization along with the path of the file if you want to manually install it. I can't say wether or not it affects my phone. Looks like I won't get activated until Tuesday! GPS works, so does WIFI. Even after installing all the same stuff I had earlier, I now have 35MB of free space available. I installed anything that didn't run on the today screen on the storage area, including Opera. |

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
good post here..
heres MY issue im having. i have 32mb left and it is still saying that "voicecommand.exe" and "gwes.exe" could not be started. after the phone finishes coming back from a soft reset i still get the same issue and when i try to use voice command i always get the "i dont have enough memory" pop-up. even at 32+mb |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
okay, im getting my first ppc tomorrow (Diamond). my dad had an original HTC Touch and I messed with that a bit. Isn't the 4GB of internal memory able to host these files?! The RAM, i thought, was just to write-to while the software was running. I'll be super pissed if this phone isn't the frickin bomb. I want to install lots of games and stupid stuff. I don't want to be limited to like 4 things on the device. I may just be really confused as to whats going on here. Someone fill me in :)

I do know that you can type opera:config into the Opera browser address bar and enter the configuration utility. Within this screen you can modify the storage locations for Opera but I havent truly delved into this one too much because there are tons of options here for configuring your Opera. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
I just picked up my diamond today and was installing some small programs when all of a sudden my storage memory was "critically low" and dropped down to 0mb!! That's when I realized that I was using the storage memory to store my email attachments through an exchange mail server. Once I selected the internal storage card to store the email attachments, I recovered about 37mb of storage. Hope this helps someone else with storage memory problems.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
If you go to the Privacy section in the setting menu you should see an option to Delete Cache.
|
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
From analyzin the Windows Dir, The most Two Dir that contain files that can be deleted are 'Rings' and Touch Mobile Guide' over 15mb of space. Just delete the Ringers that you don't need, and the entire Touch Mobile Guide. You can back them up before you delete them.
For Opera you can change the Cache to the Internal Storage by adding the following to the Opera.ini file in the Windows/Opera9 folder uder the User Prefs section: Cache Directory4=\Internal Storage\operacache\ You will also need to create the directory on the Internal Storage called operacache. Once this is done just delete the cache folder in the opera9 folder. |

Btw, the Sprint ROM is nothing compared to the custom ROMs that are available for this phone. Check out the Diamond Upgrades section. Juciy 2.4.1 is my personal favorite so far. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Connect via activesync enable hidden folders - delete items in recycled on internal storage and device - pocket mechanic is a nice pick up as well.... I have many programs installed on both the device and internal, rollin with 78MB of free storage.... Hope this helps.

I tried to copy and/or move the touch mobile guide to my internal storage so I could then delete it from storage memory but it seems to be "read only" and can not be moved or copied using activesync. I then tried copy and pasting it using file explorer and it seemed to work but really didn't. Not only didn't it work but now I can't access the touch mobile guide at all. How did you move it? How did you delete it? I'm probably going to have to do a restore from this mornings spb backup. I'M NOT HAPPY! |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Leave the folder and delete everything that is inside it. Also don't use Activesync to delete the files use 'FileExplorer' on the device and make sure you select the option to 'Show All Files' under the Menu option.

Really would like more storage memory, guess I'll try your opera cache suggestion next, but that's just 4M based on the default cache value so not reclaiming a lot. What is all this s..t on storage? Seems really stupid!! ](*,) |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
well the device comes with only 90 MB when you first turn it one and out of that 90, 45 or so is already used by the system. So not sure how much more you are going to get. You are not goint get all 90 back. My Touch had more memory than this but it's a trade off for TF3D and the phone itself of course.

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
I deleted the Touch Guide files, which nicely freed up about 10MB. Problem is that they seem to have reinstalled themselves the next time I ran Activesync. There are hundreds of these damn guide files---all named by their section numbers--in the Windows folder now, and I can't delete. ](*,)
Any way to get rid of these bloody files for good? |

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
Is it safe to delete the cab files in the Windows folder or will I be screwed in the event that I need to do a hard reset? In other words, will a hard reset restore those cabs from ROM?

Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
The change of Opera cache does free up 4mb, now the problem is how we can get rid of those pre-installed junkies while mainting the overall good-looking Sprint interface.
To me, SprintNav is useless, since I use igo for GPS. And other junkies should be installed in internal storage. The question is if we have a way to uninstall or delete those junkie after sprint customerization. I know we can skip the installation but we lose the interface. |
Re: How to clean up memory on the Diamond?
my question is which programs can and can not run on the internal storage memory. these are the programs on my main memory:
1. diamond hologram 2. king sol solitaire 3. gyrator 2 4. instant messaging 5. pocketlock 6. rss hub 7. sprinttv 8. tcmp 10. telenav 11. window media player i am curious which of these programs i can re-install on my internal storage memory and have it still work. |
