Diamond Reviews

This thread is for reviews of the Diamond. Let's not let this turn into a discussion about your experience ordering it or any problems with shipping...this is purely a "review of the product" thread.

Tell us the pros, cons, and post up some pics and screen shots.

Coz

Come on Telus users, you've had this thing long enough to at least write SOME reviews.

The phone is sweet. even better with the Telus crap removed and rom customizations. GPS kicks arse, nice and fast on a custom rom and tweaked. cannot find any known issues with it yet. its windows mobile so expect something funny to happen on occasion.
oh and according to my telus insider she said the HTC rep stated that the end call hardware button can cause a device freez that makes the device appear to be asleep. but it does not hang up. this has been reported to monkey with some bills but telus is reversing the charges because its a known issue thats being addressed.

Wanted to ad that touch flow could use some gestures. and the responsiveness to your figure movement can be a little bit erratic

Re: Diamond Reviews

Here was my mini-review (aka Touch/Touch Diamond comparison) posted over at Howard Forums

Benefits of the Diamond...
1) The Diamond is no more "complicated" than the Touch. If anything, they've moved some of the settings and stuff up to the "Touch" interface, as opposed to having to go into the Windows Mobile windows.

2) Both the units have the Windows Mobile 6.1 as the underlying OS, so you have similar base functionality.

3) The screen on the Diamond is a HUGE improvement over the Touch. I just had to use my Touch recently, and it's a joke compared to the Diamond. I've really noticed it when reading text.

4) The Diamond has WiFi built in, which is nice if you have that available at home or at the office.

5) The light sensor is a plus for me... I find that I turned down the backlight at night on my Touch, and then if I tried to use the unit the next day in the light, it would be impossible to see to do anything. The Diamond automatically cranks up the brightness in situations like that. However, I think the screen is only marginally better in sunlight, although I haven't done a direct comparision.

6) The Diamond has an option, when you connect to a PC, to operate in "Disk Mode", which should be faster than ActiveSync for copying files. Seemed to be when I tested it, although I haven't tried again lately.

For some of the downsides of the Diamond vs Touch...
1) I don't think the battery life is as long, but it's still early. More screen real-estate (in pixels), additional sensors to monitor all the time (light and accelerometer), and whatever else all seem to take their toll.

2) No microSD slot on the Diamond. It's got 4GB built in, but that's it, and it's not removable.

3) Glossy surfaces attract fingerprints. That extends to the button area on the bottom. The Touch didn't have that issue to the same degree.

1. Have you noticed any bluetooth issues at all?
2. What about the problem with the Touch where it froze if left charging overnight... does the Diamond exhibit any of that kind of behaviour?
3. How responsive are the input options? Do they have to play catch up when you type really fast?
4. Has anyone put Touchpal on their Diamond as yet?

That's it for now, lol. I'll post some more questions after I do some work.

What about opera? is it fully operable yet with embedded flash? If not, how will the update be applied to the phone?

You can go here for some video reviews I made. I have not had much time lately to
add new videos.

I flashed my Telus Diamond and I would like to add some more reviews showing some of the improvements with the new ROM (Juicy's).

1. Bluetooth works awesome. I have not tried A2DP
2. No freezing overnight ever
3. Input is very fast. One thing that helps is install Diamond Tweak to increase the sensitivity of the screen
4. Touchpal works great but it seems counter intuitive (at least to me) and I have been using the HTC compact qwerty.

No embedded flash. Newer builds of Opera are included in Juicy's cooked ROMs

Im going to be ripping my registry and passing it on to Juicy so he can include these tweaks :D

just want to finish what we have on our plate first.

Does the screen cover up some of the input boxes on the screen, like the touch does? Like, if you were inputing username, and password on a website. Where you have to keep opening, and closing the keyboard to see what you have typed. Or has HTC come up with a way around this problem? If this makes any d%mn sense.

Phonescoop is probably one of, if not the, worst written and worst edited, wireless sites.

It has its uses, but usually after a device has already been launched. It's garbage when it comes to getting the "scoop" on devices.

Do you have a seperate headset you could try to connect to at the same time? Tilt supported this but Ive seen no feedback on if any handsets since do.

How did you get text messaging to work in landscape mode? I heard it doesn't switch to landscape and gsen doesn't work for telus????

How about simply rotating the screen the 'old' way? For instance, on my Titan I assigned a hardware button for rotating the screen. You can probably do something similar on the Diamond (though maybe not a hardware button)...

Although, are you sure gsen doesn't work on Telus - that doesn't make much sense?

I remember my Touch, when using the 6.1 ROM, snapping to the bottom of text messages / adjusting so that you could see what was going on when responding to text messages.

Shouldn't the Diamond be doing this, too?

I've tried to pull up the diamond and the touch pro in the search section, but I haven't come up with anything. Any else have this issue?

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. There's loads and loads of information out about both devices, and they have nothing.

Nice reviews. Can you have an indepth one over the keyboard. None of the online reviews go into it with much detail. Stuff like texting, online browsing without bookmarks, posting on ppcgeeks, etc...

Issues like typing ease, organic handling and landscape typing would help a lot for people musing the Diamond and the Touch Pro.

Just thought I'd share this review from Business Week.

http://www.businessweek.com/the_thre...product+review

Pre-warning, it's not a very favorable review. For those of you that were in between getting a Touch Diamond or Touch Pro, this will give you some perspective on the on-screen keyboard (which seems to be the main focus of the review).

Re: Diamond Reviews

I'm using touchpal on my sprint touch, and it automatically moves up the screen so that I can see what I am typing. Is that a feature of touchpal, or of the htc touch phone? If it's touchpal, then using it on the diamond should solve that problem.

ill ignore that review since when i had my touch i was able to text easily and i could see what i was typing in the text field at all times so ill assume the diamond is the same if not better than its predecessor at doing what im already used to. As for entering passwords yea it was a let down at first but since i only had to do that ONCE to setup email it was pretty useless to make that a downfall, also i guess nobody told them u can landscape and text now so its ALOT easier. My assessment: Reviewer is a disgruntled employee with sausage fingers.
