Re: Windows Mobile 7 Series Preview (bashfest)

I liked some things I see on WM7:
-Ability to pull contacts from multiple sources and combine them into one contact list. I'm not a facebook guy but I'm hoping this means it will pull contacts from my Yahoo/GMail accounts.
-Ability to pull events from multiple calendars and combine them into one. One presenter made it sound like it would sync calendar items w gmail and yahoo in addition to exchange calendars. Hopefully that's the case.
-Better finger/touch centric UI. I'm a media center fan so I'm already comfortable with the UI style I've seen for the most part. Some of the transitions are a bit too overdone but by and large I like what I've seen.
-Browsing on the device should be good (high res screen, capacitive touch and a processor that should be able to keep up)

I'm not a gamer (outside of bubble-breaker when I've got a few minutes to kill) but the XBox live tie-in, the zune integration and the socail network stuff all looks like it should create a device that appeals to the broad population instead of just techies and business folks (like me). Which should help the platform become and remain viable moving forward.

Things that are question marks for me...
I'm curious what is to come in the office hub... I know the MWC presentations were focused on the consumer aspects of the device but I'm really interested in more of the business centric capabilities. Hopefully the MIX presentations should help shed some light on this.

The downsides for someone like me (a techie)...
The move to a more controlled platform (more limited multi-tasking, hardware restrictions and application restrictions including limited native code development). I don't know what it means to the platform yet but MS has their work cut out for them.

At least the platform is still built on Win CE... which hopefully means some of my favorite apps like Garmin XT will be able to be ported.

can't and WILL NOT happen my friend. you need a brand new phone or the HD to run it. the devs aren't even sure if they will be able to make custom roms out of it yet becuase it's soo locked down. IMO wm7 is a huge fail for microsoft.

Only time will tell, but I happen to think that this will be a huge success. I dont agree with it nor am I fond of it but I do realize that Microsoft (phone) will never make it in this biz if they keep trying to cater to the techie. We are a very small percent of the market, almost not worth mentioning, and in order to compete you have to cater to the masses or just quit all together. So based on this I realize there has to be change for the better of WinMo phones and hope it is successful and then who knows, maybe they will open the OS up again to the techie world.

If the "here" were a site with one area only, you would have a point. However, this site has many areas and this Windows Mobile 7 rant belongs in the proper one:
