Yeah. EVRC is "Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC".
It enables a lower bitrate (bandwidth) while still mainting voice quality (full rate at 8.5 kbps, half rate at 4 kbps, and eighth rate at 800 bps) The setting we changed "forces" it to 13kbps. Both Verizon and Sprint use this codec. They might have the capability to over-ride whatever we set our phones to tho'. I dunno. It made it a little louder for me IMO. Let me know if you think I am wrong...

I have not had any ill side-effects.

thrilsekr: thanks for the kick butt reply! Always nice to get the "technical" explanation of these tweaks :D

I think it's a bit louder...definitely not any worse!

It is a huge advantage when someone not only tells you how to do something, but why/how it works.

I think Verizon/Sprint have enough available bandwidth to let me and you use 13k instead of the 8.5k max EVRC allows. I pay for it, I should be able to use it....

changing ring tone directory

Quote:

Change location of ringtones
You can change the location where WM5 will look for ringtones by adjusting the following key (example given is for ringtones placed on the Storage Card root folder)
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sound\Categories\Ring\Directory = "\Storage Card\" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
The default location may be "\Windows\" or "\Windows\Rings\" depending on your Device provider

i was trying that out but it doesnt work!! can someone help me out?

I'm sure we can help if ur sure about this. because it has been known to cause a delay in the ringer, and in some situations caused missed calls. so if ur still sure let u know. ;)

He's right about this...best to avoid the hack altogether. I find it best and more efficient to just re-code everything into mono WMA format: I have had files (mp3) go from 600 kb to 50 kb while keeping the quality. They load much faster and I don't have to worry about space.

It won't work at all, so don't worry about trying.

MS changed that feature in AKU 2.1 and it cannot be undone. However, due to negative customer feedback they fixed it in AKU 2.2 allowing it to have the battery or time up there in the start bar, via a registry setting.

Until (if) we get AKU 2.2+ you really can't due much exepct "cover it up" with a plugin which I attached below. (source)
