can't sync to a PC through USB - keeps asking for exchange server!

I gave my XV6700 HTC cell phone/PDA running WM6.1 (actually, a cooked ROM from the Helmi kitchen) to my dad. I had been using it to sync data over-the-air with an Exchange server, but he doesn't have an account on such a server, so I deleted that email account in
Messaging. I gave him the device and he plugged it via USB cable into his laptop (XP), hoping to simply sync over USB with the Outlook data on the laptop. Activesync on his machine sees the device, connects, can browse it, etc. But when it tries to sync the Outlook data, the WM device asks for a username/password for an Exchange server! Worse yet, after I bit the bullet and cold-reset, it's still happening!! Where is this setting - why does it still think it needs an exchange server when synchronizing over USB to a laptop? How do I make it forget about the Exchange server and just sync with the laptop like it should? Thanks in advance for any hints.

Mike
