The screen you see is made up of two components. The LCD and a clear plastic overlay called a digitizer. The problem you're having is due to the digitizer. The random alignment issue is almost always due to the contacts around the edge of the digitizer not being perfectly in contact with the contact points on the LCD, but can also be the ribbon-like connector leading off the screen or the digitizer could just be going bad.

This is common in refurbished LCDs but can also happen from just dropping your phone once.

Thanks for everyone's help on this issue. After reading everyone's comments/suggestions here I realized since putting my phone in my pocket, rather than a holster, I have had this screen issue. I cleaned the lint out w/ paper and compressed air. I had to do this at least 10 times till I started to get consistent results. And now I am using my holster again. This seems to have alleviated the problem! Woo hoo! I have noticed that the issue returns if I put my phone back in my pocket for a day or so. Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I was beating my head against the wall!

This issue ought to be added to the noob guide thread! And one thing that I found is the paper method for cleaning works well, but you must be careful to not just shove the dirt into the corners. I found that out the hard way. It's best to start in the corners and work the accumulated dirt, lint, etc, to the middle and blow it out with duster spray. The corners seem to affect the alignment more, especially in landscape with the keyboard out.

I agree the paper method works really well. Although I noticed something strange with my phone.

I started having random screen alignment issues with my phone (running wm6), so I flashed back to sprint's stock wm5 rom. Things seemed like they were running normal, so I flashed back to wm6. Shortly there after the alignment issues started happening again. I was having to realign my screen at least 15 times a day if not more. Well I tried the pagepool mod, and after that I didn't have any more screen alignment issues. Was it a fluke or did that actually effect it?

Well, I got tired of having this issue. Even if I carried my phone in my holster the problem still resurfaced. I took it into Sprint and they replaced it with a 6800. I'm not gonna complain (other than no cooked ROMs for a while).
