If you are a brave soul, you could splice USB cables and cut the data wires out and reconnect them. It's kind of a bit extreme but it would certainly work for your purposes.
another easier idea would be to go into active sync on the laptop or PC and turn off the access to USB. this would allow the device to get power from the PC but not use it for data. this is how you have to do it for a phone that has phone as a modem enabled on it. hope that helps

These are great work around ideas but there is a way I just don't know how to make it work for everyone like it works for me. When I connect to my laptop I can still access the internet through the internet connection on my laptop. This works with my 6700 and my 700wx I just don't know why. It works for me and wingzero, any body have any ideas why?

it should be working that way unless they have firewall on or somethign thats prohibiting it from working mine works that way
Big D5, I had no idea. It just work that way but my pc is a home built. It also worked when I sync it with my work computer. I'll investigate and see why it works for some but not others.

Internet sharing software which is available with the new kitchen works great. Just attache USB cable and open Internet Sharing and away you go
I recently tried the internet sharing on WM6 about a week ago.....I'm blown away how easy it was, and how well it works. Just got back from a weekend @ the beach, tethered all weekend......the usb cable is my new best friend :)
