how large is the internal rom space?
And can I then save space by having something installed "by" the rom or does the rom simply copy everything into main memory? |

The CE ROM partition is 64MB. And yes by building applications into the ROM partition you are saving the space they would otherwise occupy in "storage memory".
This is one of the primary reasons for having the ROM kitchen. |

how do I know the amount of space that a rom will take up on the PPC?
one of the things that's bothered me about build OS is that it hasn't offered file sizes. |

Not sure what you mean. It always takes 64MB on your device. Never more, never less.
Now, you can't tell how much crap you can shove into that 64MB in the kitchen because it's hard to predict (it's not like you just add up the files sizes). |

Because files are compressed to varying degrees as the ROM image is created. Current rough estimates are that your dump folder (located in \temp after you run buildos) can be around 87-89MB and still fit. The only logical way you can squeeze 87MB into 64MB is via compression.
And yes, buildos gives you no indication of size so at this stage in the game you'll have to do the addition by yourself. Considering the cost though (and the alternative), what we have is pretty damn amazing in my opinion. |
