Updating PRL?

Ok, I'm starting to see this going around, and I'm a little confused, concerned and interested.

What is a PRL? What will updating the PRL do for me? Will it effect my Alltel to Cricket flash and render my phone unconscience(sp) from the Cricket network?

There are two primary ways to accomplish this.. manually, or via OTASP (over the air service programming). I like to put the PRL on manually, because it makes OTASP easier, but you don't have to.

To add the PRL manually, dial ##775 on your phone dialer, press send, then click on update PRL. you'll need the PRL on your phone or a memory card (hint: activesync makes this easy). Simply use the browse feature to navigate to wherever the PRL is stored, and update it from there.

PRL is attached below. Note: 1039 is not the most current PRL, but you'll update it with OTASP.

Once you've manually loaded the PRL, just dial *228 or *228xx (the xx represents two digits which vary from one cricket market to another. To identify the correct digits for your market, use this post. Cricket's OTASP system is unreliable at best, and you may have to try several times before it tells you it was successful in programming the phone. I would try *228xx first, and only try *228 if you're unsuccessful after several attempts. the reason for this is that I've had my phone connect to verizon for programming via *228 a few times.

This is also why I like to manually load the PRL onto the phone. If you dial *228 from an unmodded cricket phone, you WILL go to verizon, and sometimes *228xx won't work on a phone with the verizon PRL still loaded.
I haven't found any info on this site!

A lot of info can be found by googling. A PRL is short for Preferred Roaming List. It's basically a list of towers that your phone will associate with in each geographical area.

Carriers update them periodically. Normally you want to be running the most recent one available for your carrier.

So, are they cell phone specific? Or are they just updates for all types of phones for that carrier? You know I dont like the idea of doing anything to my phone that will kill my Cricket flash. It cost too much and if I screw it up I wouldn't even know where to begin on flashing it back. I'm a computer guy, I build computers inside cars and I help out design a front end program to mimic a dvd navigation program for 'carputers', but I'm not advanced enough to flash this phone, atleast not yet hehe... I just dont want to get myself into anything I can't get out of.

Yep you do. And yes they are carrier specific--not usually phone model specific. The PRL file is a CDMA standard.
