Kirvin Clean and Simple 3.5 New Core ROM

First off, this ROM is provided AS-IS, with no warranty, expressed or implied. By flashing it you are voiding your warranty with your carrier, and I'm not making you do it. While I'll probably be available for questions here on ppcgeeks.com, I reserve the right to ignore anyone who gets abusive or even annoying. Officially, this is UNSUPPORTED.

Okay, with that out of the way... Here's the cool stuff.

The idea behind my Clean and Simple ROMs is to apply the old school Zen of Palm to Windows Mobile. They don't include everything, they don't even include some of the stuff you'd get directly from Microsoft or HTC, but everything they do include works. These ROMs are built to be quick, efficient, and still provide as much as I can reasonably put in without compromising speed or stability. They don't do everything, but what they do, they do well. Basically, what I think makes my ROMs so popular is the integration and attention to detail. They feel like a stock ROM, only better.

This is the Sprint ROM. IF YOUR CARRIER IS NOT SPRINT, DO NOT INSTALL THIS. Don't make me slap you. After you boot up for the first time, go to the Programs screen and run ExtROM Unlock before you install anything to the ExtROM. Otherwise stuff installs scrambled and is just about impossible to remove short of reflashing. (I had this grand scheme to do this automatically using the autorun customization, but the tools to build that special ExtROM partition don't work on Vista, alas...)

This ROM is based on Helmi's 3.5, version 1.04 kitchen. It uses a core based on Bell Mobility's AKU 3.3 release ROM along with additonal stuff from other AKU 3.5 and even Windows Mobile 6 devices. So in addition to real AKU 3 drivers designed for the Apache, here's what to expect.

What's gone:
  • Cyberon Voice Dial (if you really want Voice Dial, you've got room to install Microsoft Voice Command)
  • Transcriber (on a 2.8" screen? really?)
  • Windows Live (Agh! Bloat!)
  • MSN (Older bloat)
  • Firmware Update (I think we're beyond OTA updates from Sprint, don't you?)
  • Office 2005 (see below)
  • Terminal Services (are these two really useful on a 2.8" screen?)
  • Remote Desktop (if you really need this, try logmein.com)
What's added:
  • Office 2007 (Yay! Docx files! Also OneNote)
  • Adobe Reader (just say no to pdf, but just in case...)
  • Crossbow dialer (not as flashy as some, but everything works, including the data state arrows)
  • HTC 10-button Comm Manager (warning, the ringer icon disappears when muted, but it works)
  • HTC 6-button Home plugin (modified to look a bit cleaner)
  • HTC default theme (hope you like a subdued, professional gray)
  • HTC Task Manager (yes, the X actually closes applications)
  • HTC Audio Manager (less RAM usage than WMP, and matches the theme and other HTC stuff)
  • Gray keyboard skin (to match the theme)
  • Esmertec Java (for stuff like the Gmail client)
  • Internet Sharing (IP-based tethering from Microsoft)
  • Live Search 2 (directions, maps, traffic, movies)
  • TCPMP with YouTube playback mods (get yer tube on)
  • Phone Codes (easy access to diagnostic tools)
  • WM5torage (turn your device into a USB miniSD card reader)
  • 1-Calc Lite (free calculator with tips, currency conversion, measurements, etc.)
  • HandyShopper (it's a shopping list, ignore it if you don't want it)
  • Settings applet to change your Today softkeys (so no griping about Running)
  • Total Commander (awesome freeware file manager/registry editor, also makes great fries)
  • Vibrating dial pad (to provide some tactile feedback while dialing)
  • VistaHide Battery Gauge (far lower resources than other battery meters)
  • Blank ExtROM (remember to unlock this before use)
  • And of course, my "special sauce" registry tweaks
I know that sounds like a lot of stuff, but believe me, it feels just as quick as my previous ROMs. At first boot, you'll have 36.32MB of storage free and 32.87MB of free RAM. No, those aren't typos. Almost 33MB of RAM free. Beat that, Mogul users!

And last, of course, my thanks to Hemli, Luv2chill, the Colonel and all the other folks at PPCgeeks far smarter than I am without whom I'd probably be using a Q by now. This ROM would not be possible without their work.

So without further ado (or adon't), here's the link: ftp://ppcgeeks:ezupload@up.ppcgeeks....104_Sprint.rar

The archive includes a self-contained installer and a readme file which is basically the same as what you see here.

Enjoy!

Directions? Just run the installer and follow the directions it gives you. And don't forget to unlock the ExtROM after you boot up for the first time.
