Cant load a new rom with vista?

So I put my phone in the cradle, run the ROM and as soon as it switches my phone over to bootloader it hangs at "getting information from device" (which it already got the info from my device one time before) and then windows mobile device center crashes and the phone is stuck in bootloader and I have to get out of it.

How the hell do you flash your phone with Vista?

And after I figure out that, what is the latest and greatest windows mobile 5 ROM out there? (6.1 is just too slow on this device IMO)

ps: the rom i was using was a 6.1 rom... could be the problem. But still, what is the latest/best WM5 rom?

edit: ok its like I can't flash the ROM anywhere... I got v1.04 bootloader and no matter what I try it seems like I get a gathering device info error or others...

If you look around, Vista always has been an issue (as it was when it was first released). Most people try to run it in XP mode or use an XP machine.

Goto the BuildOS folder.
Do the following for each .exe file there:
Right click on a .exe and select properties.
Click the "Compatability" tab.
Select "Run as Administrator"
Then click "Ok"
After all the executables are set to run as admin, you should be good to go.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Along with Jabu's recommendation, PDAJunkie's video found here may help with Vista.

2. Use a direct cable form computer to the phone, instead of going through the cradle.

3. As it relates to the slowness of WM 6.1, you will find that a properly installed WM6.1 will make your xv6700 run much faster than WM5. The most reliable and faster ROM's I've used lately are: 20924 and 20755. The only install options I put on mine during the build was Imaging: HTC Camera native to Apache and SD Card Drivers: SD Card Only. The rest of the software I use I installed later on an SD card. If you don't have an SD card, then select those applications during the build that you absolutely have to have.

4. Unzip the file I've attached to this post. It will reveal two cabs. One is a battery fix, which will modify your phones registry automatically to improve battery life dramatically. The other cab involves another set of performance tweaks that significantly improve the performance of your phone. Both of these cabs are in the public domain and free of charge to use.

5. Consider an overclocking software such as XCPUScalar (trial here). Costs $19. If your going to stick with the XV6700, this is a worthwhile investment. You can set it to scale down CPU performance up or down depending on CPU load. For CPU loads of 0 - 15% I set it at 208 Mhz. The phone at idle usually sits in that percentage range. At 208 Mhz, the CPU runs at half the speed of the stock 416 Mhz, which means it consumes much less battery. This along with the aforementioned battery tweak has made a huge difference in battery life for me. The highest CPU setting I use is 520 Mhz, which is about 25% faster than the stock 416 Mhz, and set it to kick in when the CPU has a load of 60% and above. This is fast enough to give you great video and almost eliminates all choppyness. You may be able to set it to a max of 620 Mhz, however, I discovered my phone was locking up too much, needing frequent soft resetting.

Good luck

Eh, I am having trouble loading ROMs from XP as well. It hangs once it switches the phone into bootloader with the "Checking the information on your device... please wait" and then I get an error

With my old apache I flashed that thing a ton of times and never had an issue. I got a replacement one the other day and I can't flash it for my life. Got stuck in bootloader a bunch of times and I'm just trying to figure this out. maybe an issue with the 1.04 bootloader?

Do you manually put it in bootloader mode before connecting it to the computer? I wonder if with 1.04 that's something you need to do.

Re: Cant load a new rom with vista?

I have a couple different ROMs I am using. one for wm5 has you put it in bootloader first, then another one it gets info off the phone then automatically sets it to bootloader. Either way I do it, it can't complete the steps necessary to install the rom. I can't make my own rom because getting BuildOS to update is ridiculous on vista and my internet connection is too slow which is why I was also requesting a ROM to try this with besides the 2 I have.

I'm really not sure what to do. I can't stand the stock setup. I had a great setup before on my last phone (at least I was comfortable with it) but this one is lacking :(

What is your attachment size limit on your email? I can cook the ROM and email you the .zip file if you want.

Re: Cant load a new rom with vista?

I use VISTA but it is fussy, go into your "Windows Mobile Device Center" and under Mobile Device Settings / Connection Settings, uncheck allow USB Connections. That will allow build OS to run and exectue your kitchen. You may have to restart Vista before it will work properly. I also always put the phone in bootloader before hooking it up via usb.

If you still "hang" then do a hard reset on the phone and select "y" ... then restart the computer and try it again. :)

Stock ROMS from the carrier I can't get to run on vista at all yet unless they are specifically for vista.

I'm running 6.1 on my 6700 and it screams... I included the performance option in the rom and have "Enable dynamic CPU frequence changing" with the 520mhz Max speed checked. The phone never hangs, hardly ever have to reset and it is FAST! :)
