Apache PPC-6800/XV-6800???

What's up with this new device? Details have been released for a long time now and it is getting confusing on the real specs of this device. Anyone have any dates or specs on this device?

I heard that the Dell Axim was deiscontinued... Sad... Now there is only one device that is affordable that has me anxious... the good ol 6800.

Though I have seen a lot of HTC's new devices that are great looking and pretty cool on specs. Though that one that runs Vista... Don't know about that one. But we will see....

Andrew,

aughsum 04-12-2007 07:49 PM

Not sure.. alot of the specs ive seen contradict eachother.

its WM5.

so unless it has gps and/or drastically improved battery life.... im still going to upgrade, but i wont be very happy with myself.

rawr 04-12-2007 07:58 PM

HTC has a Vista device now... ridiculously expensive mind you, but yes, it's a full Vista Palmtop PC

wwow... if its cdma i will buy that.

money aint no thang. i would however have to bring fannypacks back into popculture... so for all of you who purchase fanny packs in the near future, i apoligize in advance.

PocketPcUser 04-13-2007 12:44 AM

Yes. I have seen a lot of controversy on this device. I even saw a IMAP Processor @ 200mghz claimed to be on this (6800) and I almost broke out in tears.....

That new device from HTC (The Shift) looks very promising. I can't wait to see those new Intel Chips that will be in there....

Maybe Intel QUAD-Core 42nanobit architecture....

Anyone out there have an extra napkin so I can wipe me drool off my keyboard????

Andrew,

rawr 04-13-2007 07:41 PM

the shift could be a great skype phone... just imagine having an unlimited data package on it and throwing a VOIP package on it.

If you like your 67/6800 do not follow this link

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...mate-line.html

iMate 7150.. like, omg.

whats the point in spending 600$ on the latest phone if some prick with cingular is going to pull out a 7150 and make your phone look like it was free after rebate....

if i werent on the employee advantage plan through a friend then i would go to cingular soley for that phone.

EDIT: after seeing that 7150 i got kind of upset.. emailed sprint.

"I was just inquiring as to the reasoning behind Sprints choices regarding its phone selections.. Im currently on a 6700, which gets the job done but its less powerful than a pda i had 4-5 years ago. I will be getting a 6800, which is the exact same thing with only minor useless improvements, most definitely not enough to warrant spending the 600$ or whatever sprint will be charging for it. GPS and Sprint TV will also most likely be crippled on the 6800, as they are in the 6700. Cingular is releasing the iMate 7150 at the same time. So im going to spend all of this money on the 6800, and then the 7150 will come out which will make the 6800 look like i sent in 5 captain crunch UPCs to get it in the mail. PLEASE, PLEASE, start releasing phones that are improvments on your previous phones. and i dont know if iMate does CDMA but they probably do, and you should look into that. The technology in the 6800 is 4-5 years old."

Okay. Let's get a couple of things straight here that aren't total disinformation, because whether you know it or not, you're posting a lot of it.
  • Cingular is not releasing the i-mate 7150. They never said they would. They probably never will. i-mate sells their own phones, and I don't believe any i-mate phones have ever been sold by a cellular provider within the United States. May never will, for that matter.
  • Which leads into the second point. If you're looking at buying this phone, because it likely won't be sold by a cellular provider, it won't be subsidized. That means that if the i-mate JasJar is any indication (which it probably is), this phone will cost you upwards of $1,000. Probably more.
  • If you really want to compare the PPC-6800 with its GSM equivalent, take a look at the HTC Hermes or the HTC Kaiser, depending on if you want to look forward or backward in time (although comparing it to the Hermes is probably more fair, since GSM phones come out before CMDA ones do, if only due to larger markets). The prices on those are roughly equivalent with what you'll pay for the PPC-6800, with roughly equivalent feature sets. There's no point comparing a Honda Civic with a McLaren F1, after all.
  • The features you're complaining about not having on Sprint aren't likely to ever be there, regardless of how much you complain. I've poked through the pdaphonehome GPS thread, read the arguments happening here, and really, the GPS doesn't matter because they never said they were selling you a phone with one. And I honestly don't see what the big deal with Sprint TV is when you have everything that Windows Mobile offers at your feet....
  • I notice that you complain you're having technology that's several years old, that you had better stuff 4-5 years ago. Sorry, but I don't buy it. If that was true, you'd still be using stuff from that date. For example, you do realize what the biggest battery drain on your phone is, right? The cellular signal itself. If you turned that off, you'd find that the PPC-6700 lasted a fairly long time (I actually had occasion to do this). If you took your 4-5 year old PDA and tacked on a CDMA antenna, your battery life would be pathetic. Regardless if you believe it or not, what you have in your hands right now is a pretty good job in terms of compromises between size, speed, weight, and battery life.
  • Similarly, don't expect the i-mate Ultimate 7150 to have anything like decent battery life. Only a 1400 mAh battery, but with a larger VGA screen, more powerful processor, and UMTS?
  • For what little it matters, I don't think the i-mate Ultimate line is coming out in April. The current timeframe they list on the official site is "Mid 2007," which I think is post-April. PDAdb.net has updated their date to June, for example.
  • i-mate doesn't do CDMA. GSM-only.
I'm not saying the Ultimate 7150 is a bad phone. It's probably going to be pretty good, but with a fairly hefty number of caveats. I'm just saying that you're panicking without all the facts.

tbhausen 04-14-2007 08:40 PM

WHO makes the 7150 hardware? WHAT is their reputation? We know it's not HTC... If it's a new player, I wouldn't buy their first generation product line.

I would like to agree with these statements and completely say that there is always a disagreement over features in any product sold to a consumer. Lets just admit it now for the sake of our sanity. The financial backers in any company are not interested in what the people want. Neither are the people in charge of the market, say the people who come up with release dates and goals. They are worried about sales and profit to continue providing the services that they provide. We are going out at Sprint like it is their fault or responsibility to please/meet our wants and desires. They do not provide technology per'say to the users. They provide data/voice and support.. Well scratch that last one we are talking about Sprint.

They are not the ones we need to be attempting to change marketing tactics. They sell/provide the upkeep of the satilites and servers that our devices connect to, to provide for our needs; in a perfect world at least. The devices are made above their heads. We need to go to HTC, Sanyo and Utstar Comm for improving on the current devices. I can't wait to see the 6800 in my hands not because I am excited, but because I have an anxious hope that the device will actually be an upgrade. I looked at that device,

And in general it is a nice piece of artwork/design on paper. I am not happy about the fact that we won't see it as most of those high end devices don't make it to our markets. This is because of those in charge of the Companies that make the devices and really those are the ones that start out taking control of what we use. I just saw a video about the future of devices from Intel. I can say WOW and all but it is not real as of yet. What needs to happen next is the market has to adapt and lower the price points of those kind of devices which in time will happen. Of course there will be another piece of ''Must Have'' products that will be in other markets and not ours repeating this cycle over and over again.

Another thing about that device is that dumb Micro-Crap. IT is bad enough that a lot of people have problems with SD cards, let alone finding one that is compatible with the device they use. Now... Are we gonna start that crap instead of improving on the Secure Digital Front, we will just make it harder to use the products. I don't mind the fact that the 6700 can't use any of the SD cards that support TV/GPS/Radio ect., but please don't go even worse off the deep end and start putting Micro mini-mini-sd cards in the devices. Just take out that and replace it will a hard-drive. This device already has SD so why the need for Micro-Cards?

Just my thoughts, please comment at will on these.

My offhand guess would be Invertec, who I believe is manufacturing the current line of i-mate products (since i-mate bailed on HTC once HTC started marketing their own phones). I don't think I'd be too worried about the quality, actually. i-mate is staking quite a bit of their reputation on the Ultimate line, so they should be decent.

Sogarth-

okay.. the flaming ended up missing the point of my post.

why am i not using the 4-5 year old technology? because it didnt have a phone built into it.. in teh time period im referring to i had a phone and a pda and i did not like carring them both around. the sd-gps. however, was nice.

the thing about how gsm and cdma phones cant be compared.. ya they can. theyre phones. all im saying is why do gsm phones have to manufactured so much better than cdma?

1,000$+? who cares. Id rather pay 1600$ for an amazing phone than pay 600 for a phone that barely compares to it at all. thats just a personal thing though.. would rather have d&g sunglasses than dollar store sunglasses, would rather have a bmw than a civic.

all i said in my post, was that if phone manufacturers are going to release "new" devices, that we are all going to buy to stay ahead of the curve, they need to be at least somewhat new. negating the fact that our curve is lightyears behind the curve in other countries, for whatever reason. isnt america the most powerful country in the world? why do our phones suck the most? (well besides... iraq.. and the like)

I agree with every word it just makes me sad :( that these phones will never be available to the better faster CDMA network. I would love to have about 15 or 20 different GSM phones just not an option for a old Sprint dog like me. No flaming intended here just mad  and sad :( that the good stuff is always available to someone else

Because, well, most of the population out there doesn't agree with you. If they did, you'd sure see a lot more of those phones out there. But the number of phones that expensive is few and far between. Before the i-mate Ultimate line comes out, I can only name... 2 that have come out in the past several years that seem to have the feature set you're demanding. One of them didn't sell that well. The other one just came out.

You did realize that for what little it's worth, the United States isn't behind other countries in terms of phones any longer? At least not for Windows Mobile phones? They were a few years ago, but that's not really true any longer. Unless you're talking about the phones in Asia which can watch TV and such (if you're into that kind of thing). For that matter, there are now Windows Mobile phones that come out in the United States first, that the rest of the world has to wait for (case in point: the Samsung SGH-i607).

i-mate's going out on a limb releasing their Ultimate line of phones, betting that there are people (like you) who are willing to spend a significant chunk of change on a phone, even though the market so far hasn't really affirmed that belief. For their sake, I hope they're right. The last time a company came out with a phone that had noticeably better features than anything else out there... a few people bought it, but not that many. Take a look at the HTC Universal, if you want to see what history's had to say so far.

aughsum 04-15-2007 11:09 AM

the universal and the x7500, which im also interested in, are both gsm though, right?

ultimately i just want a phone like in tomorrow never dies.. the hp jordania.. 4 inch widescreen.. maybe able to remotely operate my car.. i dont know, but that form factor is what im looking for. very very very small laptop phone. are there any superphones like the x7500 or the 7150 that can be unlocked and used on sprints network? or is everything overseas gsm

really i want external vga output and gps. thats all im asking for, the 6700 does everything else for me. im looking forward to fuel cell batteries.. but battery life on my 6700 is fine because of the mini usb charging port and the ease of being able to find someone with a simular charger in a pinch. the screen could be larger.. i dont even have a need for wm6, as wm5 does everything i need it to. the ram sucks but i deal with it. i only want gps, and vga output. and no i dont want to buy a bt gps receiver, espically when the phone may or may not have the hardware in it, sprint just felt the need to cripple it.

sledgie 04-16-2007 08:49 AM

imate did indeed release cdma phones, they were the first to release the 6600 variant "pda 2k evdo", so the statement that imate releases only gsm is incorrect. however, since sprint in the us won't activate any phone unless the esn is alread in the system, and verizon having the same policy (in the past), its hard to have a good market in the US for it. just thought I'd correct that statement :)

luv2chill 04-16-2007 01:08 PM

sledgie - the pda 2k evdo was an HTC phone that imate rebranded (back when that was all imate did). They have since severed ties with HTC and design and market their own phones (so far none of which have been CDMA).

sledgie 04-16-2007 02:40 PM

I know that, I was just stating in the past they have done cdma, whether rebranded or not :)

PocketPcUser 04-19-2007 09:24 PM

Windows Mobile, and the changes to come soon!!

Windows Mobile Devices Update
Turns out that as we expected but not as soon as we expected, HTC is releasing the updates to WM6. I guess it is just in time for Advantage to get out and about and get this upgrade.
Be warned we still don't know if and when the details will be released on which devices will get it. Newer devices look hopeful. On the negative side, older newer devices are not too promising.
Check it out Here

Then again.. even the devices coming out (XV/PPC/6800) are just as unpromising... See this

I thought the processor was getting a boost. The RAM was lowered in the prototype; cross your fingers for that to change back to at least the 96MB that was mentioned a while ago. So far nothing has changed since this was seen in last years release details. So I guess we will have to accept that the only changes to the model were a forseeable update some time after its release to enable the Verizon Rev. A high speed data service.
Also some minor memory upgrades. Although they seemed to change the processor brand to another 400mhz variant.
Of course this is only a test model but I'm starting to loose my patience and my confidence in this device.
I wanted this to be Mini-SD or even better SD memory card enabled. Not that Micro crap!. And 96MB what about 128 like in other high end devices. Anyone else with me on this?
Andrew,

Raging Idiot 04-20-2007 10:23 AM

Perhaps they are releasing the 6800 like this because they have plans on an early release of something else (6900) soon afterward.

I need to read more about the new technologies coming out in regards to increasing EVDO bandwidth. I wonder if we will be able to take advantage of this with our 6700's without changing anything, or if a swap of radio files might make it possible.

It seems possible. Maybe they wanted to test the waters before they release this other one that they are working on. I wish they would go back to the SD that was on the 6600. I didn't own that device but I would rather Mini-SD to Micro. Then again, while they are at it, changing it and all, why not stick a SD drive in there.

But, out of the box, the 6800 won't even support this new technology, at least according to what I have read. So either it won't be ready in time, or they want to sell the devices with that feature to come soon. It is a matter of just enabling the built-in feature, so I would imagine that we can't take advantage of this new speed. I would think that maybe, just maybe it may in fact bump up our speed/performance on the networks a bit. But, I may just be dreaming.

Only time will tell, but I think I am gonna wait til the next device comes out. There is not any reason that I can see yet to upgrade.

Do you have problems with the Mini-SD on your device?

So, what I'm getting from all this discussion is that there's really no good reason to upgrade to the 6800... sound about right?

Out of curiousity, can someone maybe explain why it is that we're not outraged at the idea of a phone with less than 100MB of storage memory? If they can put 2gb of info on a minisd card, which is sold for less than $30, even at full retail prices (can be found for $15 or less online).. why can't they give us at least a gig of storage memory in the phone?

gbm85 04-23-2007 12:26 AM

The 6700 and the soon-to-be-released 6800 are business phones. Sure you can buy them as a consumer but the target market is businesses. What use does the average corporate user have for 2 gigs of storage?

Also RAM is much faster than flash memory. Look at all the problems people have putting today screen plugins and some programs on the storage card. Imagine trying to put everything including the OS on flash memory. RAM can be overwritten and erased almost indefinitely. Flash memory has a set "write life."

Can it be done? Soon, when flash technology advances. But not now.

Well for long trips, 2 gigs will barely give you 8 hours of video, let alone any maps for the GPS software. Then you have the whole trip back home where you have no new videos to watch. Obviously if you have a data plan and Orb then you're okay, but only if you have a data plan and the EVDO coverage is good where you are traveling.....

Then there is the pocket Wikipedia. If you want all the text and pictures then it is 2 gigs just by itself!

So on a daily basis I may not need or use the 2 gigs of storage, but there is definetely times where I do and wish I had more. So if MS would just start to support HDSD cards I'd be happy! :D

Exactly,

I've got 4 2gb memory cards full of data... Music, videos, GPS maps, business files, games and programs that I use, etc.

Out of curiousity, can someone maybe explain why it is that we're not outraged at the idea of a phone with less than 100MB of storage memory? If they can put 2gb of info on a minisd card, which is sold for less than $30, even at full retail prices (can be found for $15 or less online).. why can't they give us at least a gig of storage memory in the phone?"

Really now how much "porn" I mean information do you need to store on your phone?

Why would I waste time looking at porn on a 4" diagonal screen? I have a 24" widescreen monitor on my desktop for fun time.

but it'd sure be nice to be able to keep my GPS maps stored on the phone, so I could choose which SD card full of music I want to listen to, while riding my motorcycle cross country.
