How to tether HTC and use as wifi modem?

The wireless card in my laptop broke and I can't connect to my wireless network. I can use my htc to connect to the network though. I was wondering if it might be possible to connect the htc to the WIFI network and share the connection via usb with the computer? I tried it already and got it to work, however it connected to ev-do and not the wireless network like i had expected. I don't have a data plan so this isn't a very viable option for the future. Any suggestions?
